Hello!

so we live in the CBD and the MR of the house has just informed me that deep in our lovely colourbond shed he actually found a shedded snake skin …. grrrrrrrrr ….. I am petrified of snakes and with a 20 month ol and half a farm full of animals this is not the news I wanted to wake up to … just makes me think if its shedded its skin its got bigger and is obviously still in there .. I read that napathalene flakes is a detterent for them and they dont like to smell as it effects their senses … is this true ???

  • I am not sure about the flakes. I have heard that fennel is a deterrent for snakes (not actually tried and tested on my part)…
Definitely speak to a snake handler/rangler/expert… they will be able to give you some great tips and maybe able to do a home visit to assess the situation.

  • Also; make sure your colour bond has no hiding places; they love to hide!

  • I would recommend a ranger for all issues with snakes!

  • i don’t know about methods of deterring them but certainly don’t encourage them to set up home in your backyard. Make the yard tidy and clutter free and also chat to your neighbours saying that you had a snake and just wanted to let them know. Ideally you could all hire a skip and tidy up your backyards to help prevent this issue but most of us don’t talk to our neighbours anymore

  • Snakes like to travel along suburban backyard fences and hide under things like sheets of metal, or wood. We cleared everything away from the fences and it seemed to help, but we still got snakes coming in to our yard when it was a drought (looking for food and water). We were taught as kids that snakes don’t like loud noise, but I’ve never heard of anything that works as a snake deterrent.
Hope your local council or rangers can help you.
