Am I the only one who gets annoyed when their husband is sick?! As much as I want to be the sensitive, empathetic, caring wife, I find myself annoyed and stomping around the house like a complete and utter brat of a child!!!!

The moment my husband gets sick he retired to the couch, with Panadol, the remote and the need for ‘quiet time’. In a house with a 2 year old, quiet time is rare… I’ll play sympathetic wife for an hour or so, but then my patience wears thin. He’ll take more than a few days to laze around in bed, expecting hot cups of tea and soup, while I’m left to run the house, look after our daughter, all at a suitable ‘quiet’ level.

Inevitably I will catch whatever he has at least a few days later… And this is the point that infuriates me… I’m not allowed a sick day!!! I can’t hide in the bedroom catching up on much needed sleep, relaxing with a hot tea. Oh no… I still have to run the house and look after our daughter, all while my husband heads off to work!!!

When are mums allowed a ‘sick day’? How does everyone else cope?

  • I hear you pain this has just happened in our home except the other way around I was sick first and got no help at all in fact my partner stayed at work for 2 days not seeming to care how sick and looking after mister 20 month old It was only after he got it and was confined to bed for 4 days did he apologise saying he didn’t realise how sick I was. Never get a day off from being a mum and it might sound like im complaining but I just need a break for a couple of hours. now bubby is sick sigh!!!

  • I have the exact same reaction to my husband’s illnesses, we recently had a spell of gastro in our house, everyone had it. I was the one running around with Panadol, mop and buckets between mad trips to the loo to vomit while hubby did not get out of bed once. Two pre-schoolers are work enough without a sick husband.

  • I know what you mean, men are babies when they are sick. But we are not allowed to get sick and we don’t have the time to be sick.

  • I know what you mean, even when I’m sick I’ll get the 3 kids dinner and ready for bed (after i’Ve done homework and all the other running around) and the only thing I ask is that he puts them to bed so I can go to bed early… I end up back out if bed 5 minutes after getting comfy and end up putting them to bed myself. It’s like the second I lie down they need to talk to me and dads too busy

  • Oh gosh! I completely agree! When my husband is home sickI just get so cranky because he is messing with my schedule. He gets cranky with the kids for making the noise that they make every day, and he just throws himself in a big heap! I would love to have a ‘maid’ and babysitter to help me out when I am unwell… But instead I just soldier on!

  • Best to start ignoring his desperate pleas for attention while sick now….You don’t want this behaviour to continue and sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind! lol!!!!

  • Hahaha man colds are apparently so much worse, they think!! My husband has said he’d rather be dead than deal with a runny nose, meanwhile he doesn’t always understand how exhausting it is for me as I have chronic hayfever and sneeze allllll day, and clean the house from top to bottom, and look after our two babies, and am pregnant. If I say I’m tired, he’s like “I’m tired too!!” LOL. We all are.

  • My husband when he’s sick likes to be in the lounge room and then will fall asleep and then get annoyed if he gets woken up by our 1 and 2 year old. I tell him if he’s that sick then he should be in bed but he thinks being in the communal area he can help me watch the girls. It’s a hindrance and definitely not helping.
