The simple mudcake has sparked a debate about which of the major supermarket chains Woolworths or Coles produce the most delicious chocolate cake.

Surprisingly, it was a remarkably close call with Woolworths only just managing to take the cake (pardon the pun).

Members of the Woolies/Coles Mudcake Hacks group on Facebook (yes that is seriously a group!) had strong feelings about one or the other, shared Daily Mail.

About 60 per cent of the respondents gave their answer as Woolworths, with the rest vouching for Coles.

‘Whichever one is on special,’ one woman said in the comments section.

Many others commented that they thought it was the same just with different branding?

Which one do you prefer?

  • I will have to buy them both to test them with the whole family. Whatever my kids enjoy the most is what I’ll get. Though I could eat a whole one to myself haha! I like them rich and moist.

  • We prefer Woolworths cakes over Coles, they are so much nicer!

  • Unless they are baked in-store there is a strong possibility that they come from the same manufacturer/bakery. Most products using store brand name are made by major manufacturers and labelled according to the Supermarket selling them. It includes packaged food in general. The same applies to some non-food items.

  • I have never really tasted one of these yet

  • I love the white chocolate one and for some reason I think Coles is more moist so I like it better but both are very very similar.

  • I haven’t had one from either in such a long time, so couldn’t really make an informed decision.

  • I can’t tell the difference, though Coles has some good cakes in their range these days.

  • I thought they were both the same but just different branding. Then again, I can’t eat them as I’m coeliac.

  • Cake mixes are disgusting and full of preservatives. The best cakes are made from scratch with good quality coco and fresh ingredients.

  • I tend to shop at Woolies, so I will say Woolies. But… I know I prefer Woolworths Cooked Chickens (tend to be less salty) and Coles Baked Cookies (tend to be on the chewy side not hard crunch).

  • I never buy Coles or Woolworhts’s Mud cakes ,but prefer to bake my own cakes.

  • Both taste pretty much the same to me. :)

    • Both good options for a quick mud cake on the go when I have not baked one. :)

  • Woolies. You can’t top Woolies! It’s like a light mudcake and when you microwave it for half a minute before eating so the icing melts it’s amazing.

  • I’m pretty sure they are the same cake just in different packaging? I honestly can’t tell any difference when I’ve had them
