Hello!

Earlier this year, we revealed BIG W’s plans to close a number of stores. Now the discount retailer has announced which stores are the first to be on the chopping block.

We’re sorry to be the bearer of bad news for those living in Chullora, Auburn and Fairfield in Sydney, but you guys will be losing your local BIG W by January next year.

The parent corporation, Woolworths Group, confirmed the news in a statement.

“BIG W is announcing today that they have reached an agreement with landlords to close three stores in Sydney in January 2020,” Managing Director of BIG W, David Walker said.

“These are not decisions we take lightly and we regret the impact the closures will have on affected team members.”

Mr Walker added that supporting his employees remains the number one priority.

“We will support our team and explore redeployment opportunities with team members who choose to continue their career at BIG W or with other Woolworths Group brands in the months ahead,” he said.

Following an extensive review of the chain of stores, it was determined that around thirty stores across the country and two distribution centres in Warwick, QLD and Monarto, SA will close over the next 3 years.

“BIG W will continue to work with landlords over the coming months as part of the network review and remain committed to building a strong and sustainable BIG W that meets the needs of Australian families,” Woolworths Group said.
