You may have seen a parents playing a seemingly innocent prank on their kids on social media over the past few weeks, but experts are warning it’s not as harmless as it seems.

You may have seen the cheeky prank all over Instagram reels and TikTok recently – parents crack a raw egg on their unsuspecting child’s forehead while they’re cooking in the kitchen. And the reactions from children range from total shock, to tears and sometimes laughter.

If you haven’t seen it, here’s a compilation:

But some child experts say the prank is harmful to children, and parents are completely unaware of the damage they’re doing.

Paediatric occupational therapist Amanda Mathers says while she’s not aiming to shame parents who have participated in the prank, she does want to bring awareness to its impacts.

“I got super emotional watching all of the videos from this trend,” Amanda, who specialises in child development, explained in a social media video.

She says the trend is ‘hurting my soul’.

“Children are watching and learning from you as parents. Their little brains soak up everything at this young age. If you ever find yourself wondering, ‘Why does my child hit other people, why does my child hit and bite me?’. We need to watch our actions and our words.

“You are teaching them that hitting someone in the head hard with an object is acceptable and funny. And not only that, but the worst part is that most of you watched your child respond and cry in response to embarrassment and pain and you laughed in their face. Guys this is bullying. And they will grow up thinking this is acceptable behaviour. And either one become a bully themselves or two become a victim themselves because they don’t feel safe communicating this.

“Let’s raise our children with a little bit more empathy and respect and not use their embarrassment and pain as a way to entertain people on the internet.”

What do you think of this viral prank? Let us know in the comments below.

  • I don’t understand why people use their children to get likes on social media. I feel for the kids who get humiliated while the parents laugh. I don’t find this funny at all

  • Wow, I’m shocked by the comments on here. It’s hilarious, I can’t see any lifelong damage done. Get a sense of humour for goodness sake

  • Not funny at all ! Actually it’s pathetic and harmful. When you’re really desperate to do such a thing then do it to an adult, maybe your spouse or how about your boss ?

  • Yep have to agree on this one, i didnt enjoy it

    Reply

  • Yes I agree. It’s not a good prank. I would never do that.

    Reply

  • Yeah, I agree. If you take your kid by surprise and upset them, no way should you be posting that.

  • If the child knew it was coming and was OK with this then there’s no real harm. I’d personally be worried about egg shell breaking and going into the eyes.

  • I am not a fan of this and do not think this is ok.

  • I do not think it is funny, and it makes it worse when the daughter turns to them and was clearly upset.

    Reply

  • Yes this is why I dont watch things like this just attention seeking

  • I love the last little girl and she is 100% correct.

  • So many stupid things on social media and I am always amazed they have so many following these ideas.

    • I agree and that’s why I am extremely selective about social media. Absolutely no interest in pranks and ‘look at me’ behaviour.

  • Will not watch this; so many red flags; bullying, abuse and disrespectful.

    Reply

  • I agree with the comments of the Ped. Occupational Therapist; harmful, not a good prank, not a good example, not taking our kids serious

    Reply

  • This is sad to watch. Definitely don’t agree with these silly trends all for the sake of ‘likes or ‘followers’…

    Reply

  • Seriously, that is just stupid. Don’t know why all these “sheep” follow each other with these dumb trends just for views on Tik Tok!!!

    Reply

  • If someone did that to me I can’t even guess how I would react – I know it wouldn’t be nicely though.

    Reply

  • This one’s not for me, I’m afraid!

    Reply

  • oh that’s horrible. The poor kids, but then again it is funny. Maybe more appropriate to be done on older kids.
