An 18-month-old boy has been killed in the Whitsundays after being hit by a car in the family’s driveway.

The incident happened at 3pm on Tuesday afternoon at a property near Airlie Beach.

Senior Sergeant Nathan Blain told the Whitsunday Times that the person behind the wheel was a family friend who was visiting the property.

“The person was leaving the property, but it’s still too early in the investigation to say exactly what happened,” he said.

Initial investigations indicated the boy had been near the gutter at a driveway of a Twin Creek Court home around 3.10pm when a vehicle leaving the driveway struck him, police said.

“The Forensic Crash Investigation Unit are investigating and we’ll be liaising with the coroners offices in relation to it.”

Police will prepare a report for a coroner.

  • This is a tragedy which will rock the lives of the toddler’s family and the unfortunate friend who hit and killed the toddler.
I have never had an 18 month old toddler down on the ground outside the front door. I very much doubt a toddler that young could unlock a front screen door. Depending where he was, he may not have been visible in any of the driver’s mirrors.
