Millions of popular baby swings and rockers are being recalled amid strangulation concerns, after one infant died and another was injured overseas.

Product Safety Australia issued the recall today, following 4moms Australia issuing its own remedy recall in August this year.

More than two million MamaRoo and rockaRoo Infant Swings and Rockers have been recalled due to entanglement and strangulation hazards. According to the company and recall notice, when the swings or rockers are not in use, the restraint straps can hang below the seat, and crawling infants can become entangled in the straps.

In a press release in August, the company said, “4moms has received two reports of entanglement incidents involving infants who became caught in the strap under the unoccupied MamaRoo infant swing after they crawled under the seat, including a 10-month-old infant who died from asphyxiation, and a 10-month-old infant who suffered bruising to his neck before being rescued by a caregiver. No incidents involving the RockaRoo have been reported.”

In its notice today, Product Safety Australia said the defect led to the fatality of a child overseas.

4moms recall

4moms Australia is offering consumers who own a mamaRoo infant swing (models 4M-005, 1026, and 1037) or rockaRoo infant rocker (model number 4M-012) a free strap fastener to upgrade their product and ensure that the product continues to conform to the highest safety standards internationally.

The recall impacts rockers available for sale between 14 May 2018 and 28 September 2022.

4moms is urging parents who have babies that can crawl to immediately stop using the recalled swings and put them somewhere that a crawling baby can’t access.

In August 4moms Australia released a statement, saying: “Please note that no safety incident has occurred outside of America, including Australia, however The Amazing Baby Company is working with the ACCC to establish the best remedy and outcome for Australia consumers.

“We would also like to note that the product meets all required safety certification and there is no risk to the occupant of the product.”

Anyone who has an impacted rocker should register their details with The Amazing Baby Company to receive a free strap fastener that will prevent the straps from extending under the swing or rocker when not in use: Register Details Here.

  • Thanks for alerting us to the recalls. When I look at some of the photos of these things, there would be no way I would have purchased them as ‘common sense’ [yes, I know it is in short supply] would say these are not fit for purpose.

  • Any fault that kills babies should be treated with urgency and importance.

  • Those poor babies and their families, particularly the little one who passed away. It goes to show that once your littles are crawling you really need to do another check around the house (get down on their level) and check for hazards.

  • This is why I over research the risks of everything before I trust products with my baby in them
