Dogs have been mans best friend for over 100,000 years. Originally starting their evolution as wolves, they helped humans through some difficult times.

There must be something pretty special between humans and dogs to last this long. If you are on the fence about getting a dog, here are 5 reasons you should take the plunge.

1. You have the perfect reason to go for walks as a family

Going on a walk can be dreadfully boring for some kids. Just getting them to put their shoes on can be a hassle. A dog however, can change the whole dynamic of a family walk. Instead of it being a chore, your kids will actively enjoy walking their furry brother/sister. It’s a good way to get the family in shape!

2. Snuggling and patting dogs increases feel good chemicals

It’s nearly impossible to stay angry, anxious or frustrated when you are playing with and petting a dog. For children who suffer from some types of anxiety, they may benefit from having a furry companion around. Petting a dog makes the body release feel good chemicals such as oxytocin, prolactin and dopamine! These feel good endorphins zap our negative feeling and leave us with a more positive outlook!

3. It encourages responsibility

By allowing your children to have some responsibility  over the family dog, you give them the ability to learn about responsibility, and how their actions affect other living creatures. having a dog is good for children as it allows them to ‘Parent play‘ and practice their caregiving skills.

4. Gives your child a friend who is always there

A dog will always be there for your child. After a long day at school, weekend sports etc. It gives your child a friend to turn on when they are not feeling their greatest. It’s a friend they can confide in when they don’t want to turn to human company. A dog is great at keeping and listening to secrets!

5. When your children drop food the dog will eat it

Less cleaning up for you to do, what’s not to love?

  • When I was a child, I had a Blue Roan Cocker Spaniel. One of the friendliest dogs you could ever possibly meet. The only hassle was the grooming, but that was in itself calming!
