Whoever said there’s no such thing as a free lunch, didn’t know about the best kept secret at Coles. And it could score you a free hot chicken.

It’s one of the best lazy night dinners or quick lunch options there is – the good old bachelor’s handbag, otherwise known as the Coles hot chook. But did you know there’s a way you can get one for free?

Ellie, who works in the Coles deli, shared on her TikTok account, itsellieinthedeli, that she wanted to reveal the best kept deli secret ever.

“If you come to Coles before 8pm and there are no chickens in our chicken warmer, you can get a free roast chicken on us,” she explained.

***EDIT: Only at stores with ‘our promise’ signage on the warmer.**** Finally time to reveal my favourite deli hack chicken 🐔 🫣😆😆🩷🤌🏽 #deligirl #freechicken #chickenvoucher #coles #supermarket #roastchicken #delihack #delisecret

Wait, what?!

“I know it’s pretty cool,” Ellie continued. “So our chicken promise is that we promise to always have a hot chicken ready for you. But if you come to the store before 8pm and the oven isn’t broken, then you are entitled to a free chicken ticket. You do have to ask us, we’re not going to offer it to you, but if you do, we’ll give you one of these vouchers, and you have a week to come and collect a free chicken.”

Ellie did clarify that the offer is only available at Coles stores with the ‘Our Promise’ signage.

In just a few days her video has gone viral, with thousands of people thanking Ellie for revealing the tip.

“I used to purposely go to Coles at 7:30pm to get a voucher because my local Coles liked to clean and close early so 90% of the time they’d have no chickens left,” one shopper commented. “It was a bit awkward when it was the same worker but they never said no to giving me a voucher.”

Did you know about this? Will you be asking for a free chook next time you can’t get one at Coles? Let us know in the comments!

  • This is great to know and I wish I knew it sooner! So many times our cokes has been out of bbq chooks!
The only thing is I really question whether or not all staff would be aware of this. I’ve never been offered it before and I would be embarrassed to ask and get laughed at!

  • This is a pretty handy tip, though I do wonder how widespread the offer really is – I have to say I’ve never seen it, though also admittedly I haven’t been looking for it. Still, even if it only applies in some stores it’s handy to know about – maybe I’ll get to use it one day.

  • The other day in WW I needed a Cooked Chicken and their was not one in the heated area so I asked and they said they were not cooking any today. So I went to COLES and they had none as well in the heated area. I asked at the Deli and she said they will be ready in 10 minutes and she will hold one for me whilst I shopped. I am happy with this response as I went out for a quick coffee and grabbed my chicken on they way home.

  • I’ll ask my local store if they do this.

  • It has been very interesting to read the comments from members of this community. It would seem that there has been little success in people being able to get a free roast chicken. I must admit I have not seen the price/promise guarantee in stores; but will now keep an eye out for it with great interest.

  • So disheartening to read the comments here, I had no idea it was a store to sore basis. It would be great if it were a consistent rule.

  • I didn’t know about this, but since I’m rarely shopping around then I suspect I’m unlikely to use this tip. It’s a good one though. I’m not sure how I feel about people trying to game it by turning up when they know there aren’t likely to be any available, though.

  • Run don’t walk everyone LOL – Great tip to share for those who love a hot chook. Personally, I don’t have the time to go and get a chook that late at night, we tend to eat dinner earlier these days. I love that people are sharing there hacks and tricks for others to enjoy. The our promise signage isn’t really displayed much these days or if it is, it is not as easily accessible to see. I will have to keep an eye out if i am ever in Coles around that time.

  • They used to advertise this and stopped a long time ago. Many stores do not do this anymore and if you try they will simply say that its not a thing anymore. I was told that at my regional Coles and I know others that have been told the same thing at various stores.

  • I can 100% guarantee that this would most likely not apply to any Tasmanian stores. They are a law unto themselves here and we miss out on all the little quirks. I have looked into something similar before and you basically get told to go get stuffed. It sucks because we are one of the more expensive places to live when you compare wages.

  • No I never knew about this. I wouldn’t actually know if the Coles store I visit has the ‘Our Promise’ signage and how do you even find that out ? I mostly do my grocery shoppings in the morning right after the school drop off. I find the stock in general later it the day is not as good, but in this case that can be in your advantage

  • It is up to store manager where they offer this. Ours doesn’t and never has as I have asked many times. Head office confirmed it isn’t every store and at discretion of store manager.

  • I don’t think any Coles near me offer ‘the promise’… But if they did, I believe common knowledge of it would change their policies real fast. Supermarkets like Coles are just not out to help the Australian community. Their profits are their priority and it shows.

  • An interesting article and tip about possibly getting a free roast chicken from Coles. I wonder how many people have actually been successful in getting a free roast chicken; it would be very interesting to know the numbers. Probably not something I would do for a few reasons; including being at the store at that time of the night.

  • Will definitely be keeping an eye out next time and sharing with my mum friends and, of course, my mum! My boys are always super eager when I put a hot chook in the trolley and start rattling off what they are going to eat with it. Funnily enough frozen peas is normally the top of the list.

  • definitely one thats been around for a while. a great initiative on their end to offer it to customers. but also be mindful that unless they have a signage there offering that promise, dont expect all coles to be doing this as you might find yourself leaving with no voucher. always check the signage!

  • A good tip that’s been around for a while, my younger siblings taking advantage a few times. I can’t say I’m ever at the shops that late so no free cook for me! I wonder if this is the same person who had the ‘hack’ to take grapes out of the paper bags, which isn’t really a hack at all when you pay per kg
