Australian Federal Police have just issued a very IMPORTANT message that all parents need to read.

In a statement the AFP have said, “Parents, it’s SO important that you know what your kids are doing with their mobile devices.

We’ve just arrested a 36 year old man for soliciting child sexual exploitation material through the everyday apps your kids use.

We’re alleging he used the chat functions within the apps to communicate indecently with children, solicit child exploitation material and to send indecent images.

Our Commander Lesa Gale, who leads the teams engaged with the investigation and prevention of adult and child exploitation, says that child sex offenders are contacting children through mobile phone applications, online games, and social media networks.

“Many parents may not be aware that chat functions appear on several popular applications and games. This includes popular kids’ apps including Animal Jam and Musical.ly, instant messaging such as Kik, console games and other social networking platforms,” Commander Gale says.

She also says there are proactive steps that parents and guardians can take.

“We encourage parents and guardians to know the apps and games their children are using, supervise their children online and talk with their children about online safety.”

Further information about online safety and specific apps can be found on the ThinkUKnow website (thinkuknow.org.au).

Please keep a close eye on your child’s activity both on social media and their gaming apps.

  • If any parent decides that a child needs to have a mobile phone for whatever reason, they should program in things to limit its uses. Kids are way too open for abuse when online with predators

  • My Uncle was smart. He gave his oldest child – a boy one for emergencies only. It is a very basic phone. It has two numbers programmed into it for emergencies and apart from that the phone is “locked” His son cannot call any other numbers. I don’t know if his phone will accept calls or texts from other numbers at all. I don’t know if he even knows his own number.

  • Just my opinion but anyone giving a child a phone would be wise to set up profiles that restrict their child’s access to apps they don’t want them to access as well as controlling the times they can use their phone. There are many different ways we can control our child’s access to their phone by doing a few minutes of research. This is also something to think about — do you Mum’s put a sticker over the camera on your devices including your desk top PC, laptop, mobile phones etc? These are areas that are easily hacked giving hackers a good look at what you’re up to using the built in cameras on devices as well as hijacking them. Those cheap packets of little coloured dot stickers are an effective way of blocking their access or a piece of masking tape etc will also do the job. Stand alone webcams are also a hacker’s paradise.

  • So scary they are so crafty but we parents need to supervise kids at all times. I remember having do much freedom as a kid and now we just can’t do that anymore

  • Luckily that the Federal Police found out. There are so many risks. Super important to talk to our kids and monitor what they do on line.
