Catherine Hughes should be planning a first birthday party, sadly she’s not. Thankfully she does have some beautiful news to celebrate though.

Baby Riley passed away from whooping cough on the 17th of March, 2015. He was just four weeks old. Catherine recently shared the last videos of baby Riley saying “we are sharing this in the hopes that it will convince just one more pregnant Mum to protect their baby from this disease.”

Catherine shared on the Light for Riley Facebook page the exciting news of baby number three.

“We are so happy to share with you that we are being blessed with another little superhero (or princess!) this August!

We are overjoyed but very nervous at the same time. We haven’t allowed ourselves to get too excited until our scan this morning as the scars of losing Riley run deeply.

Our daughter is over the moon and keeps cuddling and kissing my tummy. She asked if the baby could be Riley again, and we explained that it would be a different baby but one that we would love just as much. She seemed excited to consider the possibility that it might be a girl, and has tried to insist that it be named after her hermit crabs ‘Flower’ and ‘Rosie’ – lucky baby!

The morning sickness has been tough, but my husband grins whenever I am feeling ill as it seems to remind him that it’s really happening, that we’re really having another dearly wanted child.

… And yes, I will definitely be having a third trimester booster!

Congratulations to the family. We wish them all the best.

  • i would dearly love to know what they named bub :)

  • That’s wonderful news. No parent should have to go through the loss of a child. It’s a credit to them that they have used their own heartbreak to bring more awareness to others.

  • Bless them, that’s wonderful news !!

  • I sincerely wish them all the very best too. xo

  • Whilst this child will never replace Riley, I am so pleased they have a new bub to look forward too. I’ve no doubt they will experience many mixed emotions over the coming months and post-birth to ensure this baby remains safe from others.

  • Do hope your message gets through to others. Whooping cough is a horrible disease and it’s not necessary these days with good vaccines to overcome it.

  • may all the joy & happiness from your baby Riely give you the love & peace to pass on to your new baby.

  • it kind of goes without saying that she would have that booster. poor people. i feel sorry for the littlie who just doesn’t understand it all and misses her baby brother.

  • CONGRATULATIONS, hope everything goes well.

  • Congratulations on having a rainbow baby on the way, I wish you all the luck in world that all goes as planned.

  • Congratulations to them. Whooping cough is a horrible illness and everyone should get their child immunised so that no other family have to suffer like this.

  • Congratulation and well wishes to them with their baby girl. Let’s hope people don’t forget the importance of immunisations to help prevent these tragedies in future.

  • Congratulations indeed! I wish them a world of happiness!!

  • That’s fantastic news. Wishing them all the best for the arrival of new bubs.

  • Tears of joys for this beautiful, brave family! Congratulations and may Riley be giving you a big cheesy grin in excitement up in heaven.
