If you haven’t yet heard about the butter board trend – there’s no doubt you’re going to see it popping up at a gathering very soon! Simple, easily adaptable and utterly delectable, butter boards are the latest viral food trend that we’re crushing on!

Chef and author Joshua McFadden is credited with creating these shared platter masterpieces, while recipe developer Justine Doiron sent the concept viral on social media.

“I want to make them the next charcuterie board,” she explained on her TikTok video, which has had more than eight and a half million views. “I just love the concept. It’s all about … like if you’re serving a bunch of people, spread a bunch of soften butter on a plate. Add tonnes of flakey salt, tonnes of lemon zest, any herbs or toppings you want. Serve with warm bread and it just feels really communal.”

Butter boards can be created using pretty much any savoury (and some sweet) toppings that you fancy. But here are Justine’s general rules.

  • Make sure you use softened butter and a large board so there’s plenty of room to spread ingredients.
  • Always use flakey salt and lemon zest as a base and to add depth of flavour.
  • Layer the toppings on next. Some suggestions include veggies, spices, toasted nuts, and then top with some honey for sweetness. Just make sure everything is cut small enough so guests can gather a good amount of everything onto their bread.
  • Serve with crusty, warm bread. Delish!

Since Justine send social media into overdrive with her board, others have created their own versions. This gorgeous creation includes lots of sweet flavours balanced with herbs. What a delight!

And here’s another twist, swap out the butter for creamy goat’s cheese. An absolute taste sensation.

  • Just call me Madeline, because I love my bread and love my butter! This is sooo up my alley. Some lurpak (or the French stuff if I’m feeling fancy), mix in some roasted garlic, Maldon sea salt, crusty bread and I’m in heaven.

  • So – it’s just kind of like a dip made out of butter? I don’t think I’m really a fan.

  • This isn’t one that really appeals – too messy.

  • I’m very keen to try this!

  • These look delicious… Although I don’t know about having it out at a party for everybody to be dipping in and dropping crumbs in

  • They definitely look very pretty and I’m sure you could have so much fun decorating but I just feel it’s too messy and weird. Don’t think I’ll be trying this. I’ll stick to cheese platters

  • Not a great fan of communal boards, but admit these do look pretty – not so sure what they will look like after being eaten a bit.
