Two batches of children’s sunscreen have been recalled, amid concerns an issue with ingredients may lead to no sun protection after it’s applied.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration of Australia (TGA) says it’s received reports that the sunscreen fluid is ‘splitting’ into layers. It means the medicinal layers that prevent sunburn aren’t properly mixed, so when applied the sunscreen may not offer the same protection.
The recalled batches of children’s sunscreen are: Natural Instinct Kids SPF50+ Clean Sunscreen 200mL topical cream and 50mL rollerball products.
According to the TGA, when sunscreen is applied the ingredients inside the medicine help protect skin from damage caused by Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) tells you how well the sunscreen will protect you from the sun. Because UV rays can cause skin cancer, the protection offered by sunscreen is extremely important.
“The liquid in the affected batches of Natural Instinct Kids SPF50+ Clean Sunscreen is splitting into layers, meaning the ingredients are no longer properly mixed,” the TGA explained. “When this happens, the SPF of the medicine changes and may not offer any protection at all.”
If you’ve purchased Natural Instinct Kids SPF50+ Clean Sunscreen and it’s labelled with either of the batch numbers above, don’t use it. Return the product to the place of purchase or contact Natural Instinct to arrange the return or with any further questions you may have.
