Hello!

They’ve become the hot hair accessory after a resurgence in popularity, but we’re being warned to remove claw clips before driving, after reports of horror injuries.

While the clips seems harmless enough, they’ve reportedly caused injuries to women who have been involved in car accidents.

Paisley shared her story in a bid to warn other claw clip wearers of their danger. She posted a series of TikTok videos, showing the injuries she sustained after wearing a claw clip in a car.

“I was very lucky that I just needed staples,” she explained.

Paisley says she was a passenger in a car with her friend when the accident happened.

“She turned really hard and we were going just under 20 miles an hour (32km/h) and we rolled. And the back of my head hit a metal bar, which lodged the claw clip in the back of my head. My boyfriend was there, luckily, and my cousin and they literally ripped the roof off … to get me out.”

They drove Paisley 45 minutes to the nearest hospital.

“When we got there they immediately took me back to get a CT and x-rays of my head and chest to make sure I didn’t have any brain damage, which I was very lucky I did not. They gave me five staples in the back of my head, they didn’t move my hair or nothing, they literally stapled in the wound.

“Yesterday was the first day I could wash my hair since the accident, it’s been four days. I cannot brush it, it hurts too bad. I do not remember anything from the accident, everything that I’ve just said is what I’ve been told about it.

“I’ve gotten many, many, many comments from people who have been in wrecks and died from having a claw clip in their hair because it caused too much brain damage and it was permanent. I was very lucky. It could have been so much worse.”

Claw clip warning

Incredibly, Paisley’s claw clip didn’t even break, with hospital staff handing it back to her once it had been removed.

It’s prompted dozens of videos warning women to remove claw clips before they start driving.

“Women who are driving with claw clips in their hair are getting into crashes and these claws are embedding into their skulls,” warned TikTok user and nurse Amanda. “Don’t take any chances, take out your claw clip.”

  • Never thought about the damage that they can do in a car accident.

  • I have always found that my hair is too soft and fine for claw-clips to be effective with me. So pleased I haven’t been able to wear them after I saw this post. Thanks for sharing it all with us.

  • Logically, anything solid close to your head could cause problems.
I feel like the ones that are still comfortable to wear in the car are the bigger risk.

  • Yeah wow something you definitely don’t think about upon chucking your hair up in. I always take mine out when I’m sitting or in the car it’s way to uncomfy. Did just order my teen daughter some cute ones for her bday coming up… makes me cringe now

  • I don’t wear these at all. My hair is too thick to hold and they just get in the way.

  • I’d always found them too uncomfortable to wear when in a car so took it out. This article doesn’t surprise me, they could do some real damage.

  • That’s a worry

  • Err… she got comments from people who died in crashes? Zombies maybe?

  • Ouch! Thats crazy. I love these clips…. but wont be wearing them in the car any more… :/

  • Oh my gosh! I would have never thought about that!

  • Wow….I always wear these but at the same time I always take them out when im driving as they bang against the head rest in the car which I find annoying

    • I always remove my claw clip too, potentially too dangerous.

    Reply

  • Ouch that’s not fun. I find them uncomfortable anytime I try one. So I stick to wearing it when I put make up on to keep the hair away from my face.

  • Something you don’t really thing about when doing your hair in the morning!

  • So many things can happen in an accident. You can choke if eating, get burned if drinking a hot coffee, have spectacles smash into your face, have jewellery embedded into your skin. The list is endless.

  • I’ve never used claw clips and now I’m glad I don’t. Who would have thought that something as simple as a hair accessory could cause so much damage to your skull.

    Reply

  • I thankfully don’t use claw clips

  • How awful and surprising how common claw clip injuries are. I was getting something out of the car one day and forgot I was wearing a large metal claw clip in (it’s actually heavy and tends to weigh my hair down). Thinking I had enough room behind myself between the car roof and my head to get out, I accidentally knocked the clip right back into my noggin quite hard and it does feel like it digs in. It wasn’t as bad as this story, but was enough to make me go ouch and be wary!
