Mum shares the question after having an argument with her husband about how often the kids should have a bath.

She explained that her hubby wants their kids (1, 5 & 7 yr) to bath/shower everyday and she just don’t think it’s necessary.

I tend to agree with her, especially for the younger two children. It is not really recommended for kids to bath daily at a young age as it is not good for their skin.

Mums join the debate.

Her question certainly sparked a huge online debate with many mums both for and against.

Many parents responded that it is a must DAILY! Sometimes even twice a day. While others argued it was not necessary.

“I think it depends on your child. My girls aren’t super dirty and also because of their eczema, it is better that I don’t bathe them every day. But if my girls get dirty then def into the bath they go.”

“My 3 and 5 probably every 2 days unless they need it my 13 yo boy is a stinky teenager so everyday for him.”

“Doctor told us not to wash kids everyday, was causing skin rashes. He said once a week, well not sure about that, perhaps he didn’t have kids!!!”

“Didn’t shower my kids daily as learnt in nursing not good for your natural skin oils etc. As adults my children are continually complimented on there beautiful skin and as adults yes they daily shower.”

“Winter every other day summer everyday if dirty.”

“At 4, daily. As a newborn, once a week.”

“Your skin has it’s own microbiome and it is not actually healthy for you to shower every day. However that being said I find it difficult to go to bed not feeling very clean, however in winter, particularly if I’m not going into public, I can miss a shower say every second day. As far as my children go, during term my school age child showers daily but my 2 year old it depends on what activities they got up to during the day.”

What do you do?

  • Everyday. I know doctors said Eczema shouldn’t bath or shower everyday but i just cant stand going to bed without showering. Just dun use too hot water and apply whatever cream you use for eczema immediately after it.

  • Infant once a week, 4yr every 2-3 day unless she gets really grubby of has been at preschool. As someone with sensitive skin, I understand just how bad daily washing can be on your skin but I also know it’s important to keep clean, so weekly for the 4yr old just doesn’t work

  • Depends on their age and what they have been doing – I often let my kids miss a day, if they hadn’t been doing any thing strenuous and weren’t covered in mud, but I guess everyone has to do what they think is right. Sensitive skin can be harmed if you wash it too often.

  • All depends on the days activities, but at a minimum every 2nd day.

  • I often get excema. Multiple doctors have said not to shower daily. Depends on what you’ve done through the day, the weather, and how messy you got.

  • When my daughter was newborn she was only bathed every three days (spills & what not wiped with a warm wet face cloth) however she is two now & she showers/bathes every night because she just gets too grubby!
My granny used to just tell us “wash your face, feet, pits & bits” ???? & we would have a proper bath every second night.
I guess what I’m saying is, is that there’s no one way. Are they clean? Cool. If they’re not the bump up the bath time!

  • I can see how rashes can happen with washing delicate skin too often. My hands are dry and sometimes get rash-like when I’ve had to wash them far too many times in a day, for days. I think going a few days is alright as long as the child hasn’t soiled themselves. As soon as you produce B.O., under the shower daily you go. Or in the bath if that’s your style.

  • My Mum washed under our face then under our arms and our bottoms every day. It depended what we had been doing, how dirty we were and what the weather was how many times a week we were bathed. Think back to when everybody was totally reliant on rainwater. People including adults did the same thing and bathed once a week. The bath water was sometimes used for washing clothes, then floors, and the rinse water used on fruit trees

    • We may see a return to this in years to come, if we do not start to conserve water resources now, with 50% of water going towards agriculture, and with gas fracking and mining using up huge amounts of ground water too. Put your rain tanks in now if you can.

  • The GP said two or three times a week max for our young one with eczema. Once they hit double digits it’s definitely every day, but younger than that we generally went every second day and very mild sap.

  • Had this debate with other half but yep my kids get dunked daily. Bubs too….but no soap every other day for him. He’s a sweaty bub and I don’t use any kind of powder so I want that bum that’s been sitting in pee on and off through the day to be rinsed at the very least. I tried it hubby’s way and bub ended up with very sore creases under his arms and smelly under his fat chin.
