Fans share concerns for Jessica Simpson after she turned to Instagram for advice on how to remedy her severely enlarged ankles during her last trimester of pregnancy.
Jessica is expecting the arrival of her third child any week now, and fans are worried that she could be suffering from the life-threatening condition, pre-eclampsia.
It began when Jess turned to Instagram for advice –
“Any remedies?! Help!!!!?” she captioned a shocking image of her swollen foot – a common side affect many pregnant women face.
Luckily, her followers came to her rescue and provided the 38-year-old mum plenty of advice.
“Get your feet above your heart. Stay hydrated and call your doctor,” one person wrote before warning her that swollen feet can also be a sign of pre-eclampsia – a potentially fatal pregnancy condition linked to high blood pressure and may also mean an early delivery.
“If you can make play-doh like holes in your ankles that’s not a good thing. Concern from TX and a formerly preeclamptic Momma!” wrote one fan.
“When my ankles looked like this I had preeclampsia – I was induced immediately prayers for relief and that all is well,” another added.
Pre-eclampsia is a disorder of pregnancy characterised by high maternal blood pressure, and protein in the urine. It is the most common serious medical complication of pregnancy, affecting around five to eight per cent of all pregnancies in Australia. One to two per cent of cases are severe enough to threaten the lives of both the mother and her unborn child.
The causes of this condition are not fully understood, but genetic factors and the placenta seem to play significant roles. Pre-eclampsia tends to be more common in first, rather than subsequent, pregnancies.
What are the symptoms of pre-eclampsia?
Pre-eclampsia initially has no obvious symptoms and most women with the condition feel well. That’s why regular antenatal checks of your blood pressure are so important.
Early symptoms of pre-eclampsia include:
a sudden rise in blood pressure (above levels at the start of pregnancy)
proteinuria (protein in your urine).
Over time, you may also develop fluid retention (oedema). Oedema is a common pregnancy symptom, usually causing swelling of the feet and ankles. However, sudden swelling of the face, hands and feet can be a sign of pre-eclampsia.
Some of the advanced symptoms of pre-eclampsia include:
dizziness
headache
visual disturbances, such as flashing lights
abdominal pain just below the ribs
nausea and vomiting.
If left untreated, pre-eclampsia can lead to serious problems such as:
fitting or convulsions
kidney failure
liver failure
blood clotting problems
death.
Jessica and her husband Eric Johnson have already confirmed that the new addition to the family will be a little baby girl.
She will grow up alongside their other children, six-year-old daughter Maxwell Drew and five-year-old son Ace Knute.
