What if I told you that you had won an all-expenses paid vacation at a hotel for two whole weeks?

Would you be ecstatic? Or sceptical?

Perhaps I don’t get out much, or maybe I get overly excited about the smallest of things- but either way, the very thought of a two week all expenses paid hotel adventure sounded thrilling to me!

Holiday Afterparty

“The Holiday Afterparty” is what I described it as to my husband and his parents, although my in-laws most certainly did not share in my enthusiasm!

How often does anyone get to stay in a hotel and have everything provided for them, everything taken care of for two weeks and not have to worry about a single thing?

It’s like winning an all-expenses paid mini holiday!

The more I spoke, the more distressed my in-laws became.

Forced Lockdown

You see their return flights to Australia at the end of March were cancelled. Then they planned on returning home after the 15th of April, however, the thought of being in lockdown in a hotel is not what they were planning on when they arrived home at all.

Try as I may to entice them with how wonderful it would be to just relax for two whole weeks and have everything done for them, albeit within the confinement of a hotel room, they could not see the beauty of it at all.

Prison

“It would be like living in a jail” my mother-in-law argued.

Admittedly, I suppose the lack of freedom to travel as one pleases would seem quite limiting at first, but what if you used that time to catch up on reading or learning something online?

They would still have access to all of their electronic devices and perhaps the hotel might even provide wifi.

The time could be used to catch up on sleep. Rebalancing after jet lag could potentially take up three out of the fourteen days.

There would still be phone calls, television, heck they might even have access to newspapers!

No matter which angle I took I wasn’t going to be able to promote this to them as the spectacular opportunity that I saw it to be.

Freedom Was More Important!

No, they wanted their freedom. Not this 14 day self isolation inconvenience!

They want to be able to return to Australia, to be able to go to their own home, where they aren’t on guarded lockdown for their mandatory isolation period.

Like many people, they want to be free to live their lives. Not necessarily following the restrictions as strictly as what is enforced.

And this is probably the very reason why we have such strict regulations in place!

I feel for them, honestly I do. The life of a social butterfly would be incredibly challenging during a global pandemic.

Isolation Nightmare

In fact, I don’t believe they have ever been at home for even a 24 hour period. So the thought of 14 days must be a nightmare for them.

It is not anyone’s right to put others’ lives at risk though and the quarantine period is necessary for the safety and health of everyone.

If you’ve been on holidays overseas that is absolutely wonderful for you, but no one forced you to go. This is why it’s incredibly important that when you do return home you respect the mandatory regulations which have been put in place to save lives, not just of your immediate family and friends, but all of us, as a community.

If we feel we can’t observe the 14 day isolation period, hopefully the penalties serve as a firm reminder of the seriousness of this criminal offence.

Fourteen days doesn’t seem like much when you consider that so many have lost their loved ones to COVID-19 for a lifetime.

Would you welcome or resent the two week all-expenses paid quarantine stay in a hotel after returning from overseas? Tell us in the comments below.

  • While it sounds like bliss for us, 2 weeks away with nothing to do. The actual experience is anything but that. Knowing someone who had to hotel isolate I wouldn\’t have wanted to trade places – no fresh air, food that was appalling and overpriced, security guards walking the hallways, but no daily check ins to make sure the occupants behind the doors were actually ok. The idea behind it great for safety but the execution awful.

  • It sounds like bliss to me!! Lots of sleep and food delivered to my room, perfect!

  • I would love it. I’ve spent longer than that in hospital and not been allowed out for ‘fresh air’ or allowed visitors. Two weeks in a luxury room, regardless of not being able to use the pool, but having meals provided and TV, would be great. As long as I could read! I usually come back from travel tired and/or sick anyway, so it would give me time to recover/

  • This was one thing that really got me angry. Was that everyone wsa complaining about it. The truth is not everyone coming back from overseas was following the correct procedure. So they had to put something in place to protect everyone. Well they should be lucky they actually got to come back to Australia or be stuck over there. They didn’t have to pay for accommodation or the food. Yes I would preferred my own house like everyone else but I would of done it. I think everyone needs to take this a little more serious

  • If I had to do it, I’d do it. Would I get bored, hell yes but at least I know in doing the right thing.

  • I can imagine it’s the fact you’re locked up without options. But, in the scheme of things, 2 weeks where everything is provided for you… it’s a necessary evil to keep you and everyone else safe.

  • I’m in 2 minds about this. I would probably love it for the fact of not cooking, no cleaning and no work. But I have seen they get 3 square meals a day and not much choice so that would irk me but… I mean FREE. I am also a huge sloth of a person but even I’d get bored with Netflix and lack of fresh air. And we have kids; keeping them amused would be a task because even after awhile they’d get sick of devices. I think it comes down to choice. I’m fine being lazy and doing SFA when i’m CHOOSING to do so, but if it feels like I’m being TOLD… I’d probably buck a bit. Still; there are worst things to happen to travellers so I think they should just suck up and see.

  • Depends- if you literally had to stay in a room two weeks would be horrible. If you could go for walks, swim in the pool, maybe get a massage and there’s unlimited movies and Netflix, sure.

  • As long as there was netflix, internet and food I would be perfectly fine to do this, maybe that’s just because i am a homebody hermit type person!

  • I think it is the best way to keep loved one safe after you have travelled overseas.

  • I would not mind staying two weeks all expenses paid for the safety of others. All you need is a positive attitude! Have a plan to walk around the room and exercise and read and watch TV and people watch out the windows. Plan your meals keep eating healthy and talk to people via the phone. The internet is there for you too! Food for thought… Elderly people who are hospitalized then need to live in a nursing home and just returned back to their residence are put into isolation. Stuck in their room, served their meals for two weeks in their rooms with the door shut. Some don’t have access to a phone or they do not have anyone to call. So being in a nice Hotel sounds good to me! It’s not forever two weeks is nothing!

  • I would love this – someone else having to cope with my husbands dietary restrictions due to his COPD and being on dialysis 3x a week and the fact that his oesophagus has been torn and might likely tear again [not if but when] – I would have two weeks away from worrying

    • Aw bless, sounds you can do with a break !

      • I too have dietary restrictions, my oesophagus has torn on multiple occasions resulting in long stays in hospital. (the only thing I don’t have is the dialysis, thank goodness) so I can feel your pain. Would be a treat to be in that kind of jail-getting fed and just able to relax.

  • I would welcome it though it’s quite restrictive. It would be good in the sense to have some down time.

  • Just do what is necessary to keep the community safe.

  • It would be hard. But having corona and spreading it to vulnerable others would be worse. Suck it up. It will be over in 2 weeks.

  • We should appreciate all expenses paid stay in hotel room though it’s not ideal but still much safer.

  • It’s not something I would want to do with young children, and thankfully won’t have to! But the people staying in hotels do need to just accept it. Yes, it’s smaller than a normal house, and yes, if you get ticked off with your partner there’s nowhere to go to get a break, but you do need to think of others lives. As much as they may not like lockdown they would hate knowing they infected others and were maybe even responsible for their deaths!

  • It would kind of depend on the standard of the hotel I would be in and what they would be supplying in the paid for list. Even so, it would be really hard for to not be able to go outside when I wanted

  • Its definitely not a holiday staying in one room for two weeks, but the consequences of not doing so could potentially be far far worse. So, catching up on movies and eating food already prepared for you are the wins you need to hold on to. Also, there are people doing it far far tougher than us – hotel room for two weeks if a first world issue.
