Hello!

If you’re a fan of cheese, sleeping and money, we may have found the perfect gig for you. And it’s all in the name of science.

Website Sleep Junkie, which covers all things sleep, wants to put to the test a common sleep-related theory – that eating cheese before bed gives you nightmares. And they need help.

So they’re calling on the public to become ‘dairy dreamers’ and consume cheese before bed as part of an experiment. They want to know if consuming cheese before bed impacts sleep quality and energy levels, and if it triggers nightmares.

Who said cheese gives you nightmares?

It’s a bit of an old wives’ tale and a bit of urban legend, but the theory is that the delicious dairy gives you bad dreams if eaten before bed. There’s research from 1964 that claims a patient stopped having nightmares when he ceased his pre-bed cheddar cheese eating habit.

Now Sleep Junkie wants to either prove or debunk the nightmarish cheese theory.

Here’s a little more about the Dairy Dreamers job: “The chosen candidates will be paid for their work and all cheese costs will be expensed. Our dairy dreamers will become our official cheese testers, providing honest feedback on how eating various kinds of cheese before bed impacts their sleep quality.”

If you’re chosen as one of the lucky five, you’ll need to log your sleep via a sleep tracker, provide a written evaluation of sleep quality and energy levels throughout the week and give feedback on your dreams and nightmares. The gig starts in March and you’re expected to commit for three months, after which you’ll be compensated $1000.

Now, here are the caveats:

  • You have to at least 21 years old
  • You need to own a smartwatch or fitness tracker that tracks sleep
  • You need to have a consistent sleep schedule and sleep alone during the trial
  • You can’t suffer from any current sleep issues
  • You can’t be dairy intolerant (obviously!)

If you’re chosen, the sleep experts will provide you with a list of cheese that will need to be eaten each week, from blue to hard, soft-ripened and processed. You’ll then eat each kind of cheese every night at the same time before sleeping, for a week, then have a week break. Then you’ll start on the new cheese for a week, before another week’s break.

  • This looks fun! Study results will be interesting, although I usually have cheese during brunch with tea or coffee and not right before bed.. Greek yogurt with fruit and muesli is my go-to snack right before sleep. Would that be the same principle for most dairy products potentially causing nightmares or only the cheese I wonder?
