Hello!

Mother’s Day is fast approaching, and what better way to thank mum for all that she has done for you than with a delicious bottle of wine?

Even a novice will have no trouble picking out the perfect vino after utilising these helpful champagne & wine tips and tricks.

Firstly, if you know whether mum prefers white or red wine, this will be helpful in narrowing down the contenders. If not, no need to fret. A helpful tip to remember is that typically white wines are much lighter and sweeter than reds. Reds tend to have a deeper flavour profile, and are much stronger.

Here is a chart on flavours that will help in a pinch:

Light Dry Wine

  • Pinot Grigio
  • Sauvignon Blanc

Sweet Wine

  • Riesling
  • Moscatto

Rich White

  • Chardonnay

Sparkling Wine

  • Champagne
  • Prosecco

Light Red

  • Pinot Noir
  • Grenache

Medium Red

  • Merlot
  • Cab

Big Red

  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Shiraz
  • Zinfandel

Now that you have decided on red or white, you can take it a step further and make it a pairing! Now, surely you have heard the age old saying “white wine for chicken and seafood, red wine for everything else”, which can be helpful. But today, we are going to take this practice a step further.

Here is another handy little list to help you in your Mother’s Day wine selection to give you a better idea of the best food and wine duos:

Light Dry Wine

  • Green Veggies
  • Roasted Veggies
  • Fish

Sweet Wine

  • Soft Cheese
  • Carbs
  • Smoked Meat
  • Dessert

Rich Wine

  • Roasted Veggies
  • Carbs
  • Rich Fish
  • White Meat

Sparkling Wine

  • Green Veggies
  • Soft Cheese
  • Hard Cheese
  • Carbs
  • Fish

Light Red

  • Roasted Veggies
  • Rich Fish
  • White Meat

Medium Red

  • Hard Cheese
  • White Meat
  • Red Meat
  • Smoked Meat

Big Red

  • Hard Cheese
  • Red Meat
  • Smoked Meat

As you can see, the general idea is that whites tend to pair very well with cheeses, veggies, and fish, while reds tend to lean more towards red meat. So, if mum loves a juicy t-bone, perhaps a medium red is in her future!

Using this wine guide for Mother’s Day, you are sure to find some beautiful wine gifts to please mum. After all, she deserves it!

  • My Mother isn’t an alcohol drinker. Substitute will be her favourite soft drink or special coffee with her favourite little cakes.
She always says she just wants time with all her family at the same time for longer than normal….Please, no flowers…they give her chronic hayfever.
