Hello!

A mum says she believes 12-year-old children should be able to make decisions about their own hair, after she gave her son’s friend a dramatic haircut, without asking his parents’ permission.

The mum says her 12-year-old son and his best friend Aaron spent the day together, and she later asked her son if he wanted a ‘buzz’ his hair before his dad picked him up.

“I said I could do it while he and Aaron play video games,” she explained.

“When I was done with my son, I asked Aaron if he’d like to even out his bob. His hair was like Kurt Cobain’s. He said no because he was going to get it short like my son’s. I said I could do that instead. He said okay. I even let him put in some colour. I dropped him off a couple of hours later.”

Not long after, Aaron’s parents called, and they weren’t happy.

“Well his parents called me like they were excited. They asked why did I cut Aaron’s hair. I said I know right? You can now see his eyes.”

“They said no. I had no business cutting his hair. I said I was surprised because Aaron is way old enough to groom his hair. They said I should had asked. I said it’s hard to have a talk with people who think 12-year-old boys should get permission to style their hair.”

Now the mum wants to know if she was in the wrong for cutting the boy’s hair. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Yes this mum was way out of line !

  • Absolutely not ok in my opinion.

  • You definitely crossed a line here. 12 yo or not, its not your child and you dont get to choose or do it without parental consent . The odea of empowering kids is being pushed a bit too much these days. I would be furious if someone did this to my boy.

  • I think you have totally crossed a line. It’s not your child or your choice to cut their hir regardless of what you think

  • Not your child, not your decision. I agree he should be able to choose what he does with his own hair but it’s dangerous territory when you interfere with parenting responsibilities

  • I’d be so angry if someone did that to my kids without asking me first. I agree at 12 years old they’re old enough to make their own decision but you should have shown respect and spoken with the parent first. Not cool.

    • I 100% agree with everything you’ve said! This would anger me beyond belief.

  • Not your child… when will people learn?! It was a simple text message!

  • I would definitely not do that without getting permission from the parents first. You aren’t a hairdresser!

  • I would be disappointed that they didn’t ask first.

  • She should have spoken to the boys parents. or gotten him to speak to them, before she did anything. They probably let him choose his hairstyle but at the hairdressers. She definitely did the wrong thing. How would she have felt if someone did that to her son without her knowing?

  • I do let my kids choose their haircuts at 12…. but I would not take it upon myself to do it to anothers kid without the parents OK. It’s just a respect thing. What I’m fine with others may not be.

  • A 12 year old is still a child. 100% the parents should have been checked with first. Insignificant to some but major to others – people need to respect that.

  • I would have asked, even though a 12 year old can do there own hair it is best to always ask first.

  • i would be furious too!

  • Of course thats wrong. I would be so annoying if anyone cut my kids hair without asking how dare she.

  • Oh gosh no way would I even attempt to do that I would of asked his mum first is it alright

    Reply

  • Ooh no, that was so wrong. You have to check with the parents. Not all 12 year olds are the same and you had no right to do that.

    Reply

  • Not acceptable and completely disrespectful.

    Reply

  • Not cool – lack of respect not to check with the parents.

    Reply

  • I wouldn’t have cut hair without double checking with parents.
