A heavily pregnant woman has been accused of selfish behaviour by a young couple, who told her to stop thinking the world revolved around her.

The expecting mum, who is eight-months-pregnant says she’s often tired when standing or walking for long periods of time.

“Yesterday afternoon, I was craving ice cream, so I drove to a nearby shopping centre to visit my favourite ice cream shop,” the pregnant woman explained on reddit. “Unfortunately, the place was quite crowded, and all of the tables surrounding the shop, as well as some nearby sofas were taken. Because of that, after getting my ice cream, I decided to sit on one of two massage chairs that were close, and eat it there.”

Even though the expecting mum sat in the massage chair to eat her ice cream, she wasn’t using the device.

“Once I started eating the snack, I got approached by a couple that was in their late teens, or perhaps early twenties. They asked me to get off the chair, since I wasn’t getting a massage, and they wanted to receive such a service together, which I refused to do. In return, I offered to leave once I finished eating, or if they found me a different place to sit, since I could not stand for more than a few minutes at a time, and had a relatively large dessert that I wanted to finish.

“Upon hearing that, the girl was not happy. She told me to stop acting as if I was ill, that just because I was pregnant, the world did not revolve around me, and because I was not paying for a massage, I had no right to sit on the chair. She then asked her partner to get a security guard, and a few moments later, he came with such an employee.

“The guard took my side, and asked the couple to either take turns using the second massage chair, or wait for me to finish eating, which upset the girl quite a bit. She accused me of being selfish and preventing the owner of the chairs from earning money, and left with her partner.”

The woman says she told her younger sister the story, she agreed with the couple, and suggested it would have been better to go to the shopping centre when it was less crowded. However, her older sister says she did nothing wrong and that the couple was unreasonable.

  • I can see both sides of the story. However, a bit of empathy wouldn’t have gone astray.

  • That’s super rude of the couple. You were there first. They can learn to wait

  • Rudeness is not acceptable at anytime. Patience is so lacking and respect.

  • Leave her alone. She’s pregnant. Making a baby is a big deal and the young ones need to have more patience and kindness.

  • I think that young couple were very rude. Why couldn’t they come back at a later time. They could have found something to do for a short while I’m sure. If the owner of the chairs asked her to move that’s different. I like that the security guard was on this woman’s side.

  • tough situation. I can understand both parties.

  • While the young couple were rude I can definitely see both sides to this story.

  • Some kindness never cost anyone .. surely the young couple could of waited 5 minutes for a massage chair in the middle of a shopping complex

  • I not sure there is a winner here. Yes, she was sitting in a chair that is a “business” thus preventing income but surely it wouldn’t take very long to finish the ice cream. When very heavily pregnant, it gets very hard at the end.

  • Wow! So many things about this. I can’t imagine it takes that long to enjoy and icecream. Really! So I do feel for the pregnant woman. The couple could have waited a few minutes, because realistically, we’re not talking a 15 minute wait. So I do think it’s a bit of an over-reaction, and to get a security guard? Really? Perhaps have some respect, some understanding, some compassion for a woman who is very pregnant.

  • The pregnant lady should have moved out of the chair when asked to do so. Her refusal was out of line and I can imagine this caused reaction.

  • This is a very tough one. Yes, the pregnant lady could of just moved on when asked but then again, how many people sit in them and not get massage as they just like the comfort of the seat. The young couple had a right to ask. However, being 8 months pregnant, exhaustion does kick in easily so bit of compassion could of being nice from the young couple. Cause what if that young lady decides to have a baby in the future and ends up in the same boat?
It seems there was no compassion whatsoever in the shopping centre cause no one offered a pregnant lady their seat. It’s not being “entitled” person if your pregnant and need to sit wherever you can, it’s looking after yourself and baby that is important.
When I was 8mths pregnant with baby #1, I could barely walk as my sciatica played up so I had to sit every few metres. People would offer me a seat or assistance. And I would do the same in return if I see another lady in the same situation l.

  • I think if someone wanted to use the chair for its’ intended purpose, then you probably should have moved. On the other hand, they were unnecessarily rude.

  • If someone actually wanted to pay to use it and you were just occupying it to sit, i think the respectful thing for her wouldve just been to move. After all, they are there to be paid and used and i have to agree with that. It just didnt have to escalate the way it did.

    • Good point about the chairs being a business.

  • Yes she was in the wrong but so many people these days do not have any respect or manners for Pregnant women or the elderly and I really find it quite disgusting

  • In this particular situation, if I was the pregnant woman I would have got up and moved on as soon as I was approached. The massage chairs are there for massages, not for people to sit and eat their ice-cream. I think she was being difficult, and I’m surprised the shopping centre security staff sided with her.

    • Yes I agree, the massage chairs are for business, not for having a rest eating your ice cream pregnant or not

  • It’s a difficult situation. If on public transport, someone with a seat should give up that seat for a pregnant woman, so a certain degree of chivalry should be expected. In the same note though, she really shouldn’t have chosen a massage chair to sit on, I would have thought there’d be rules about eating on them. That being said the young couple were being incredibly rude and shouldn’t have made a scene.

  • I think the pregnant woman should have come off the massage chair when she didn’t receive a massage.

  • The massage chairs are there for massages and they are earning someone money. Yes you are wrong to hog it when not using it.

  • I would prefer to eat ice cream in comfort at home rather than in a crowded mall in any chair!
