In May this year, Sheryl Sandberg had her world changed in a heartbeat.

In May this year Sheryl’s husband Dave Goldberg, 47 at the time, suffered a heart arrhythmia whilst exercising on a treadmill. He fell, suffered severe head trauma and blood loss and died.

So what was meant to be a beautiful vacation in Punta Mita, Mexico for Sheryl and Dave turned into a tragedy.

Read the story we wrote at the time here.

Sheryl Sandberg is an incredible woman and an inspiration to millions.

As Chief Operating Officer at Facebook she is a powerhouse, her book ‘Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead’ has moved ahead the ‘women in the workforce’ movement by decades and her work with charities all over the World makes an incredible difference.

But losing her husband and facing life as a Single Mum to their two children, has dealt her a massive blow. The months between then and now have been as testing as anything she has ever faced.

But today, on what is Thanksgiving in the United States, Sheryl shared a touching post on her facebook page.

She wrote “After the loss of my husband Dave Goldberg, there were days when gratitude seemed beyond my grasp.

But as the months have gone by, I’ve realised that I still have so much to be grateful for.”

In the face of fresh grief sheryl goldberg still gives thanks facebook post on thanksgivingShe then goes on to write in her post …

‘This Thanksgiving, I want to thank my family and friends who have supported and comforted me and my children as we have recovered from grief, regained our smiles and the ability to laugh, and rediscovered all that we have to be grateful for.

‘I also appreciate the many strangers who have reached out and shared their stories of tragedy, resilience, and rebirth. And I want to say a special thank you to the team at Kara Grief Counseling in Palo Alto who did so much to help move us forward.

On this day of thanks, I hope that everyone out there can find something worthy of gratitude.

“Loss and recovery are an inevitable part of being human, and I realize more and more that these experiences which take so much from us also give us the ability to be grateful on a deeper level.’

I think Sheryl is incredible.  I’m not sure I would have the ability to dig deep and be grateful so soon after such a life changing event. But I guess as Mums we have to. We have to show the way and help others around us understand that it’s important to be thankful and to look forward.

In light of the news from Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg around his paternity leave (that article here), Sheryl may be even busier in the coming months. Many are speculating that it will be Sheryl to whom Mark hands the reigns to manage Facebook while he enjoys life with the new baby he and his wife are expecting.

We also have no doubt that Sheryl will continue to advocate women in the workforce and continue to inspire women all over the World via what is fast becoming a ‘Lean In’ enterprise.

Here’s an early video that gives you an insight into Sheryl and ‘Lean In’ …

All our love to Sheryl today and always. Too, too many of our members have dealt with the same devastating news of losing a husband or partner and know that the aftermath is a roller coaster.

  • The loss of a life partner is a very hard thing to deal with and over night your entire world changes. When it happened to me I had so many emotions going on and one of them was fear. How was I going to cope. But I did. Some how we manage.

  • I love what Thanksgiving has evolved into. Once to celebrate the harvest , it is now a time for people to take stock of what they have to be thankful for. We need more of that thinking in life.

Kudos to Sheryl for seeing past her grief to the things she could be thankful for.

  • How tragic to loose your husband on a vacation !! I think my world would fall apart when I would loose my other half, but she’s doing wonder well ! I suppose the care and responsibility for her children are certainly a factor in this.

  • Each of our journeys on this earth are going to be tinged with sadness and grief at times – when you love you will also feel grief, but what a gift to feel love. When I lost both my parents I felt a tremendous sense of loss, but at the same time I realised that the reason I felt so much grief was because I had loved them so much and they had loved me – what more could I ask for. Of course we all want more time, but that’s out of our hands. All we can do is be thankful for what we had, and what we have today.
