Mum shocked when her four-year-old son ran up to her claiming the toy lion she had bought him at a Melbourne Kmart had a “willy”.

Confused, the 33-year-old mother looked at the toy and, sure enough, under the lion’s tail was an unmistakeable depiction of male genitalia.

“We were planning a trip to the zoo, and I thought it would be really great if the kids could take some animal toys with them on the day,” said Mrs Husnu, a 33-year-old professional blogger from Melton said.

“We went into Kmart, and my three youngest picked out their own toys.
“They were all really happy with them.

‘Then one of the twins turned the lion around, and my daughter yelled out, ‘Look mum, the lion’s got a willy’, and they all started laughing.”

Mrs Husnu said she wanted Kmart to stop selling the toy, which is aimed at children older than three.

She said parents should decide when to teach their children about genitalia.

“I thought it was really inappropriate,” she said.

“In this day and age, it’s not acceptable to have things like that on children’s toys.

“I buy a lot of toys, and my house is full of toys. But I’ve never seen anything like this before. It’s so stupid and just plain weird.”

Ms Husnu said she did not know what the department store was thinking.

“If I only had a little girl for instance, I wouldn’t want her seeing what men’s private parts look like at that age,” she said.

“I don’t know what they were thinking. It’s not on any of the others, so it just doesn’t make sense why it’s just on the lion, it’s bizarre.

“Kmart should look at removing this toy from the shelves.”

Parents confused by her reaction

Hundreds of comments on social media have people totally confused by her reaction.

Many have said she probably should be staying away from the zoo if she is concerned about seeing animal “parts”.

One comment read, “I guess when visiting a zoo the animals have to put pants on and not show there bits.”

– Another said, “I hope she didn’t walk past the monkey enclosure, sex education every 2 minutes.”

– “Does she not have pets? Do the pets wear pants? Animals have genitals, it’s not inappropriate at all! Instead of shaming, how about teaching the kids a thing or 2 about what’s natural and normal!”

– “Does she cover her children’s eyes when male dogs walk past?”

– Another said, “I feel she has made it a BIGGER issue for her kids now! If she had just had a little giggle with the kids and moved on and enjoyed her day at the zoo the kids would have forgotten about it! It only becomes an issue if YOU make it an issue ”

Do you think the toy is too graphic?

  • I guess this is another lesson in checking out the things you buy your children before you actually pay for them.

  • No I don’t, I think she is blowing it out of proportion.

  • Sorry – it’s about time the mum grew up and then taught her children what is real and what is fake.

  • WOW! What an over-reaction. It provides a teaching lesson for her to share with her children. I’m assuming she keeps her little kids separated at all times and they’ve never shared a bath together or seen each other’s genitalia. How did she go changing nappies for her children after the 1st. I’m surprised over this. It’s so easy to be outraged online now and slam businesses. Hopefully everyone sees a bit of sense.

  • I certainly don’t see an issue with this toy. When I was little I got a doll for Christmas. It is about 50cm tall and she has a fanny. I’d put her in the bath with me, dry her then put a nappy on her. Within half and hour I would need to change her as she would wee.

  • Well my first reaction to this story was that the Mum reacted inappropriately to the daughter, when she pointed out that the lion “had a Willy”.
A more appropriate response, might have been.
“Firstly, sweetie let’s call it by it’s correct name, “penis”. Yes, that tells us that it’s a male, like your brother and your father. You will see other male animals today at the Zoo.”
    Then move on!
I can’t believe this mother’s attitude exists still in 2019!

  • No definitely not! The woman is over reacting!

  • OMG, this woman needs to grow up. I don’t put pants on my male dog just because you can see his genitals. Did she phone ahead to the zoo to ask them to put clothes on the animals so her children couldn’t see their genitals? My daughter works in a child care and we were just talking about this last night. The toy animals at her centre have genitals as well…guess what, they are realistic. They kids don’t even say anything about it. It is normal. This mum making such a big deal about it the one causing the problem…and who teaches there child to call a penis a willy anyway? I always used the correct terms. I pity when her kids get older.

  • no should be normal as possible as we all have genitls. As an older grand mum i was made to feel ashamed about my body had lasting effect s lets be honest and not make big deal about it!!

  • I don’t see the issue with this toy. If a young child had it you could use it as an education tool eg this is a male, this is what makes boys and girls different etc

  • Someone needs to grow up. Sorry but your kids already know what it is if they laughed about it.

  • I’m amazed that this way of thinking still exists, Genitalia is normal.

  • At 4 yrs old they are just starting to question & understand the difference between sexes so this sort of thing is norma. I had a 6 yr old neighbour’s kid come up to me while I was pregnant & tell me how I got pregnant, apparently she was learning about it at school. I was embarrassed but saw the funny side of it & had a good laugh later.
If you don’t like the toy don’t buy it you silly woman.
If she is so concerned about a toy having a “willy” & that it exposes her child to differences between sexes she should not be taking them out of her home lol.

  • I’m more concerned that she is teaching her children to call it a ‘willy’…
