When it comes to crafty Christmas hacks, this has to be one of our favourites! Mum Kelli Harrison took a $20 Kmart Tree Collar and transformed it into a personalised family keepsake and we are head over heels!

Kelli says she’d been looking for a personalised tree collar for her family, but most were too expensive.

“I’d searched for these online, and found that most of the ones I liked cost around $150 and were being shipped from the US,” Kelli told Mouths of Mums. “So after seeing the tree collar at Kmart, I decided to see if I could DIY it.”

Kelli used a $20 Kmart Traditional Wooden Tree Collar and a tin of $10 Kmart Chalk Paint to transform the tree collar.

“I started by creating a stencil using my Cricut. We laid that down on the side of the tree collar that didn’t have the stock image or the cross embellishments. Once the stencil was down we painted all four sides of the box with the paint from Kmart.

“We then removed the stencil while the paint was still slightly tacky – an important step as the paint will peel if you wait until it’s completely dry. This exposed the natural wood of the box under the paint, as you can see in the images.

“All up, including the time taken to create the stencil I’d say it took about half an hour. I wanted a rustic look, so only did one thin layer of the chalk paint. I already owned the Cricut, so my only costs for this project was the collar and the paint – so $30.”

Kelli’s husband and their seven-week-old baby helped with the Christmas collar hack – and the result is beautiful. Kelli shared her creation in the KMART HACKS & DECOR Facebook group, where mums were blown away by the project.

  • The wooden box looks great even without the personalisation

  • I’ve never even heard of a tree collar ????‍♀️ Seems like just another unnecessary item to waste money on, when money is in such short supply

  • We just have a tree apron but I do like the look of this collar.

  • This looks great! I don’t have a cricut (but I’d love one haha) but to be honest even the original collar looks good. I’ve never really seen them before…

  • It looks great. I personally have never bothered with a collar, didn’t even know they were a thing until recently. Once all the presents are stacked under the tree you don’t really need the collar, in my opinion.

  • It looks great but unfortunately it looks like a bit too much effort for me!

  • I haven’t heard of a Christmas tree collar. Although I like the wooden look, I think it looks a bit bulky

  • Great idea, but I think it’s fine without any collar personally.

  • DIY usually is the only way to get exactly what you are looking for. I honestly thought it was just a crate. I didn’t realise they sold box tree collars
