A year can go so quickly.

I had my third child, Angus, in October last year. He was born with Down Syndrome, a shock when he was born as we had not done any of the testing. He also had heart issues and breathing difficulties. The first few days of his life was tough on us all, but after coming to terms with his initial diagnosis, we needed to get our heads around the more pressing issues of his heart and breathing problems. We encountered a world which was so foreign to me, the life of a ‘Hospital Mum.’ Dealing with a newborn in Neonates and maintaining a normal life was extremely difficult. I saw so many people trying to do the same thing as me and also remembering what life was like before this new hurdle.

After 68 days of Angus being in and out of hospital, he finally succumbed to a much calmer life than what he had been leading. He died on 30th December 2012.

Coming up to his anniversary I remember all that we went through as individuals and as a family and know that we are much stronger and have had our eyes opened up to what so many people have to deal with a sick child, a child with special needs and a family who has to keep it all together. We may not have Angus but we will always have our memories.

  • I am deeply touched by your story and the strength you and your family have shown throughout this challenging journey with Angus. It’s clear that he brought a unique and profound love into your lives, even if his time with you was shorter than you’d hoped. The experience of being a ‘Hospital Mum’ and navigating the complexities of caring for a child with special needs is something few can truly understand. Your resilience and ability to find strength in the face of such adversity are truly admirable. As you approach the anniversary of Angus’s passing, may you find comfort in the beautiful memories you shared and the enduring love that will always remain. Wishing you and your family continued strength and healing.
