After nine years together (two of them engaged), six kids, numerous properties and overseas trips and her double mastectomy last year, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are married.

The ceremony took place on Saturday Aug. 23 at Chateau Miraval in France, the enormous wine-growing estate where they settled in 2008 before they had their youngest kids, Vivienne and Knox. The 35-room chateau has an ancient chapel which was part of the extensive renovations the couple have had done on the property.

Somehow, for hugely famous A-listers, they managed to pull off the entire shebang in complete secrecy. Even local officials knew nothing. “It was a marriage which seems to have been carried out in total intimacy and absolute discretion,” an official from the French village of Correns told US People magazine.

The couple also got their marriage licence in California in secrecy – despite paparazzi agencies such as TMZ and Radar having staff in LA who comb through official documents looking to leak celeb news.

Of course, all six kids participated in proceedings.

Maddox, 13, and Pax, 11, walked their mother down the aisle. Zahara, 9, and Vivienne, 6, were flowergirls, and Shiloh, 8, and Knox, 6, the ring bearers.

“We’re just waiting for it to be the right time with the kids, with work, when it feels right,” said Jolie, 39, in May. “We talk about it occasionally, and the kids talk about it with us.

“Which is verging on hysterical, how kids envision a wedding. They will in a way be the wedding planners. It’s going to be Disney or paintball – one or the other! We’ve got a lot of different personalities in the house. They’ve got some strong opinions. It will be fun. That’s the important thing. When we do it, it will feel like a great day for our family.”

Part of the plan seems to have been that they held it on the same weekend as the Emmy Awards and the MTV VMAs, so the world’s entertainment press was focused elsewhere – as well on their good friend George Clooney in Italy, where he was expected to marry Amal Alamuddin. (He hasn’t – yet!)

And no lingering romantic honeymoon for the Jolie-Pitts, either – Brad Pitt, 50, turned up a few days later in London to promote his WWII film Fury casually wearing a wedding band, after which the couple confirmed the news to AP.

The newlyweds are next scheduled to film together in Malta on By the Sea, written and directed by Jolie.
