Mum asks how she can keep the name of her great grandpa alive for future generations to come.

Sharing on MoM answer the woman asked, “Translating the name William to a girls name?

“I was wondering if I can get some help with a name. My husband and I are thinking about having another child and if we do we want to keep a name going.

“My Great grandad, pop and dad all had the name WILLIAM.

“It would of stopped with me but I ended up marrying a William lol.

“So to keep that name going we want to call our next kid William, but we are unsure on how to translate it into a girls name just in case.”

One mum shared, “You could try turning William around – Mila, Miall, Milli.”

Another suggested, “Willow Billie.”

And another said, “You could name your daughter William and call her Billie. You could also use it as a middle name. Or even change it altogether to something similar like Willow.”

Some other great suggestions were, “A nickname for William is Bill or Billy, so perhaps Billie for a girl? Or Willow, Willa, Wilma, Wilda, Willamette, Willemina, and Wilhelmina. Apparently there are many girls called William so you could always use that, be unique!”

That’s a tricky one. For a girl I would probably use it as a middle name.

What would you do to keep the family name going?

  • I saw this and answered. Plenty of feminine names such as Willow, Wilma, Billie etc.

  • I’ve often thought of using my surname as a middle name. But it was also my partners dad’s name and he hated him, so it wasn’t possible

  • Lots of great ideas just need to figure out what you like best and works with your last name.

  • I saw this in questions section too but what great suggestions so far. I had Emily to keep that name in our family, not sure how i would make it a boy’s name. Emilio or something.

  • I love the name Billie, so thats what I would do if it was a girl

  • I think using it as a middle name is a good idea.

  • To be honest we’ve done nothing to keep our family name going.

  • I hope they don’t name her William for the sake of tradition as a first name. Kids are mean and she will hate it if teased

  • William for a boy Billie for a girl or like others could always use it as a middle name

  • Nicknames work well. Our Son is named for the nickname of his great grandfather

  • I agree with the others middle name is the wat to go

  • Middle name is always a good option.

  • Maybe as the middle name would be best?

  • You could use William as a middle name. It may be shorted to Bill and so could Billie for a girl.

    • Billie is a cute name and good for a first or middle name.

  • I have a boy William. Billie is nice for a girl
