A mum has faced the wrath of thousands of keyboard warriors after sharing her nine-year-old’s lunch, with some claiming the snacks are ‘equivalent to poison’.

Nita Eyvette, a blogger who runs Life Of London And Mommy, often shares the meals she makes for her nine-year-old daughter London but it was one particular school lunch that saw her inundated with negative comments.

School lunch shame

The bento-style lunch box contained kiwi fruit, a cheese stick, peanut butter and jam ‘tacos’, and an assortment of American snacks including Ceez It, Takis, and Chex Mix. The post was soon overflowing with comments like this:

“So much junk food. Of course kids won’t eat real foods when the alternative is Takis and chocolate covered cereal. The same could be said for American adults I suppose.”

“There isn’t 1 nutritious food in there. I personally find it extremely worrisome that people find it okay to give children food like this everyday. It’s equivalent to poison.”

“As a teacher, I’m surprised that the school allows so much junk food, especially as snacks. Usually it’s fruit or nothing!”

“Okay. I’m not trying to be negative and I have no children so I can’t speak for that, but as a former overweight kid who was bullied their entire life, lunches like this is the problem here. I was unfortunately taught that this was how I was supposed to eat as well. Where’s the protein? There’s literally fat, carbs and more fat and carbs. Of course the kid likes this lunch it’s practically all sugar. Again, I just wish I would have been taught better at a younger age.”

However, there were also supportive comments from parents of picky eaters, and others who encouraged understanding rather than judgement.

“For everyone complaining about this mother…. As a teacher, seeing my students with lunches like this makes me happy. I can tell a lot of love and care went into this. So many parents do not have the time, energy, funds, or desire to do this for their children. If you have something negative to say, keep it to yourself. This momma loves her baby and you can tell!”

Nita herself replied to the negativity, saying:

“1. 90 percent of the people on this post don’t even have children
2. Have immature pallets.
3. Are negative and lonely.
4. Based on some of your pages I wouldn’t be so fast to comment. Based on your pages and profiles you have no room to say anything.
4. Half are to lazy to even attempt to pack any lunch and bragging on free school lunch. Bottom line those who are inspired follow us and know what is it. The rest of you are here for the drama. So keep it coming!”

It can be so difficult coming up with creative ways to get kids to eat their lunches – I have one child who eats everything and the other who often comes home not having touched his lunch! How do you make sure your kids eat their school lunches? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Packing school lunches can be so difficult, especially when you have fussy kids.

  • Back when i went to school we often took potato chip sandwiches, vegemite and dripping sandwiches, home baked cakes and biscuits.
People just need to get over it

  • I’m sure many teachers have seen worse lunches & grateful this child has someone who takes the time to provide food for them.

  • My only thought is there is probably too much food but my seven year old is a very fussy eater. It can be so disheartening making a fresh healthy lunch which is at best left uneaten or at worst having to pick him up from school because he’s thrown up because he didn’t like a taste or texture in something I’ve packed for him. Those that judge should cook for two weeks for my child and clean up his vomit when he gags and throws up.

  • Definitely not ideal. That’s a lot of sugar and salt for a little body during the day, and processed food at that. If you can make homemade snacks and sneak some good in with the no it so good, you’re winning.

  • There does seem to be a lot of unhealthy food here. I’m surprised the food police at school haven’t confiscated a lot of that

  • People are super judgey. At least this kid has lunch, a lot don’t :(

  • I would have loved it if my youngest would have eaten at least half of what is packed here. Didn’t matter what I packed for my son, it either came back home or was thrown in the bin so I didn’t know. All he wanted was muesli bars and a drink, either water or cordial. Half the time the muesli bars came back. Every Mum knows what their child will eat and that’s the only thing that matters.

  • I would be happy to have that for lunch .I never got anything like that when I was a child. I think you should mind your own business go and live in a retirement home where all the old biddies are deaf and cant hear your .Second choice would be moved to farm for old cows that don’t produce anything.

  • Whats wrong with the world? Mind your own business and stop judging others. Being a mum is hard so give her a break!

  • Her child, her choice in what she packs in lunch box. Not what I would recommend, but not my issue.

  • You do you, your kid, your choices

  • I wish mums would stop judging other mums. Just focus on your own child/ren and let others parent theirs

    • I agree; way too many people concerned with others and their lives and their business.

  • More concerning is children that do not get lunch sent to school.

    Reply

  • I agree this isn’t the best lunch, but there is at least some attempt to get something nutritious in.

    Reply

  • I would not be concerned as long as the child is eating nutritious meals for breakfast and dinner.

  • School lunches are tough. Sometimes it is a case of what your child will eat.

  • I think the kiwi fruit and cheese stick are only healthy options. That is a LOT of food. Period.

  • I usually stay out of other people business. If that’s what they wanna do that’s fine.

  • These children are lucky they have a parent who prepares their lunch/snacks; a good variety; to get them through the day.
