Mum turns a Kmart rug into a faux fur coat for winter.

Shaniah Pontefract crafted the grey coat on Tuesday using two $19 rugs over an eight-hour time span – all while caring for her young son.

The mother-of-one told Daily Mail Australia she had been lusting after the popular fashion accessory but couldn’t bring herself to spend $100 on one item of clothing.

The 21-year-old shared her ingenious hack on the popular Kmart Hacks & Decor Facebook group on Tuesday to show others they can do anything when they put their mind to it.

‘When you put your mind on something, you can actually do it, even if it’s using floor rugs as a coat.’

‘When you want a faux fur coat but they’re $100 or more in the stores/online. So you get two Kmart Gigi fur rugs and make one yourself for less than half the price. My best Kmart hack yet!!’

‘I’ve been looking around at heaps of coats, coming into winter, and I found all these fur coats that I really loved, but I couldn’t justify spending $100 or more on a decent looking one,’ she said.

‘I’m always at Kmart, and I happened to look at the Gigi fur rugs one day and noticed a resemblance with one that I really liked but couldn’t afford.’

Shaniah said it too six to eight hours to finish the faux fur coat by hand.

‘I started drawing the designs up on the back of the rugs on Monday night and I finished the drawing on Tuesday morning,’ she explained.

‘I cut it out and stitched it up during the day and it took about six to eight hours while looking after a baby.’

How clever!Ā  Shame I am not that creative. Are you?

  • Good for her. I wish I had these talents.

  • I notice Shaniah sewed it by hand. The fibre would clog up a domestic sewing machine. You would need a factory type one to make these by machine. They would clean their machines as routine maintenance

  • I don’t think I’m clever enough to do something like this but well done to her.

  • Fantastic. I’m so not creative, but admire people who are. What a fab idea. I imagine these will sell out fast and everyone will be trying to create their own winter jackets!!

  • Very clever young lady – I like sewing, but I would need a pattern to make something out of that shape rug.

    • Patterns can be found pretty cheap these days – I stocked up on rare and unusual patterns when Spotlight had a massive sale.
