Gold Coast mum shares a clever tip to settle bub and take a well deserved MUM break!

Melissa Dykstra shared how she rested a blown up rubber glove on her one-month-old’s belly, in place of her own hand, so she could have a shower.

“It gave me enough time for a shower and to finish my coffee while it was still hot,” she told news.com.au.

“I did sit with her and she wasn’t upset when she woke up, just looked a little confused.

“She’s going through her first ‘leap’ (in her mental development) so she’s been extra clingy the last few days and makes it so hard to even go to the bathroom so I thought I’d try it and I was surprised at how well it worked.”

There have been thousands of comments on the post with parents thanking the mum for the genius idea.

  • Sometimes it just needs to be something that smells like you. I’m not being rude saying that. I am saying that from personal experience. It can work wonders If you are babysitting a baby even if he / ‘she is in her own bed.

  • I don’t think it would work on my kids, I think that they are too smart to have believed it really was my hand lol!

  • If only this was around with my first born, he was a shocking sleeper

  • Good on her when it works.
I would be a bit concerned though when baby chews or sucks on it.

  • Bravo! What a wonderful idea, so totally different and effective it seems.

  • This is an awesome idea to give your self a little bit of time out

  • It is always great when something works for a while. Hope it lasts for her.

  • Hmmm, I’m not convinced at this being the answer to all sleepless babies. But good for her at finding something that helps her baby

  • That’s a great way to give comfort to bub and time to mum.

  • THis is not a new thing. Many tricks used every day by parents.

  • Wonderful idea but am waiting for folks to bring up the safely/danger side of this eg bub waking and sucking on rubber hand etc.

  • That’s gold! Good on her!

  • I would try this…I really should try this. Not sure it’s safe for night time though.

  • Oh wow, what a fantastic idea. Who would have thought? See, the things we will do to get our child to sleep!! What for the patented expensive version available for purchase soon…

  • Wow if it works, good on her. My kids wanted the full warm cuddle. I tried different ‘hacks’ but none worked for me.

    • I agree with you – children needed the warmth of a human cuddle.
