Mums share their secret ingredients to make the perfect pumpkin soup. Yummy!

I love pumpkin soup on a cold day. Nothing warms up your soul better than a big bowl of pumpkin soup.

I like to add a bit of curry powder and a sprinkle of garam masala to add that little bit of spice and extra warmth.

Some of these clever little secret additions are actually quite genius though!

Secret ingredients from mums

Some mums add leek and onion. Others add garlic and ginger.

Some say cooking the pumpkin in milk is the secret while others add coconut milk or cream to the mixture.

Potato, carrot and celery are popular additions as well as sweet potato too.

Roasting the pumpkin is a popular technique to enhance the flavours.

Adding BACON! for extra flavour also seems to be a winner.

Nutmeg and cumin are both fave spices to add for lots of our mums too.

Meanwhile orange was something we had never heard of before. That’s a bit different.

So what is your secret ingredient in pumpkin soup? Do you have a fail safe recipe that everyone loves?

  • Always roast the veggies first for a huge flavour burst. Pumpkin, carrot, sweet potato, onion even the garlic……bung it all in the oven first

  • I can’t add spices and other things like onion because I have severe reflux but the addition of other ingredients sound very interesting.

  • Always roast the pumpkin before making the soap.

  • I love adding a couple tablespoons of peanut butter, I know it sounds a bit strange but it adds an extra subtle flavour element and a nice bit of protein and healthy fat

  • Wow~ didn’t know you can add that many kind of different things in the soup. I normally just add some spices and herbs and garlic onion.

  • I have been making mine with onion, garlic, carrots and Turkey stock (which I make), when it’s cooked it’s blended until thick and smooth, then when serving I add either a bit of cream or sour cream (whichever you prefer) and pinch of smoked or sweet paprika

  • I tend to mix it up whatever is around the house but a great version that my family (including my soup hating 4 year old) and friends love to eat is a thai version – coconut milk, lemongrass, a little fresh chilli and a squeeze of lime juice add to the thai infusion,

  • I tend to add onion and garlic… and sometimes potato or sweet potato. I do love some of these suggestions too and will be considering in the coming weeks as I warm the slow cooker up!!

  • I add bacon and cumin to mine as well as sweet potato. It certainly adds to the flavour and the sweet potato makes it creamy if your pumpkin is a little watery.

  • I do most of the time onion, garlic, carrot, sweet potato, pumpkin, black pepper & nutmeg. But I always play around and it depends what I have at home

  • I add a bit of bacon or ham, fry it off then once it’s pureed, strain it and it tastes amazing.
