A nanny who kidnapped the newborn baby she was caring for had faked her own pregnancy.

Nadene Manukau-Togiavalu, 21, has been jailed for three years. She wore a pregnancy suit for months, including at her own baby shower, as part of her elaborate scam in Auckland, New Zealand last August, reports Daily Mail.

After convincing friends and family she had given birth, despite never being pregnant, she then claimed the government had forced her to give up her newborn for adoption and planned with her 18-year-old cousin to steal it back.

But the baby the pair were actually stealing was a couple’s newborn she had just been employed to look after in the evenings.

On her third night with the couple – who employed her through an agency – Manukau-Togiavalu waited for the father to fall asleep.

Then her cousin Sydnee Taulapapa, wearing a balaclava, opened the gate with a remote control, entered the house through the back door and left carrying the baby and bags full of valuables.

Manukau-Togiavalu then yelled out: ‘The house has been robbed! The house has been robbed!’

Eighty police searched for six hours before the baby was found and returned safely around 1pm.

She was charged yesterday in the Auckland District Court and jailed for three years.

  • Oh my…..I wonder if the parents then decided to care for the baby themselves or if they had the confidence to employ someone else. I dont think i would dare trust anyone after that.

  • That is such a calculated thing to do. I feel for the new parents. So glad they got their newborn back home safe and sound.

  • What a sick individual this woman is. To have thought this through so thoroughly and planned it so well – meticulously. That is a sick mindset. I hope she is getting the help she needs, in addition to her jail time. And the poor family who were victims. What a distressing, horrific and traumatic experience for them. It will take a very long time to trust anyone with their child.

  • The poor family. She’s so young & could still have her own family. Why steal someone else’s child. she might not be mentally stable to have gone through the whole procedure of faking a pregnancy & then stealing a baby.

    • I imagine there would need to be psychological services involved in this case or I would hope so. This should never ever occur again.

  • What a traumatic ordeal for the family! At 21, the nanny could have easily got pregnant if she really wanted a child without resorting to stealing a child!

  • Geez, this poor family. They went with an agency expecting quality. I wonder what sort of checks they do on their employees.

  • How could she even think about such a thing?? I’m glad it didn’t function. And nobody suspected she was faking being pregnant?
