Hello!

Two adorable, new celebration cakes have hit the shelves at Coles, but not all shoppers are happy with the tasty treats.

The new cakes include a Koala Cake, which is a double layered sponge, filled with jam and topped with sprinkles and edible decorations. While the new Snag Cake is a chocolate sponge with smooth frosting swirls, covered in milk chocolate, decorated with a chocolate face, chocolate buttons and sprinkles. And each has a price tag of $29.

Coles customers have been sharing their thoughts on pricey new celebration cakes, with many saying they’re too expensive.

“$30 for a sponge cake is outrageous,” one person commented on a TikTok video uploaded by popular content creator Nectorious Papi.

“Could buy the sponge this week for $6 and cover it in cheap sprinkles and a couple of eyes and nose price maybe $14 all up,” said another follower.

Mum Cara Wagstaff also shared her thoughts on TikTok. “I saw this cake and thought it was so cute, it had a really yummy centre, and I thought, ‘OK cool, how much is it?’” she explained.

“I had a look at the price and it was $29. It is literally the exact same size as the Coles Mud Cake. What the hell?”

However, there are also plenty of shoppers who love the new cakes, saying there’s no way you’d be able to purchase anything similar from a cake maker for even close to $30.

  • I suppose the price is for the convenience of having a nice ready made and decorated cake. I probably wouldn’t buy one though.

  • These look amazing and so nice but not for the price! Would rather not.

  • You’re paying for the convenience and time saving. I probably wouldn’t, but I don’t think it’s outrageous for some people.

  • I don’t have a problem with the price. I’m just surprised these cakes are not refrigerated.

  • I really don’t see the problem.. if you’re time-poor and need a quick solution you, you have to pay the price for the convenience. From what I have seen with cake prices recently, these prices are actually quite reasonable. If you don’t want to pay that much, buy the ingredients and put in the time and effort to make the cake yourself – simple!

  • They’re cute. But there is no point complaining about the price – cakes of any sort are a luxury and it is selfish to pretend otherwise.

  • It’s a reasonable price for a decorated cake. It would be cheaper to do yourself and for those worried about the price they should. It’s always been the case that it’s cheaper to do yourself

  • I think the price is reasonable. You can’t buy a decorated sponge cake elsewhere for less than $50

  • Gotta love the price of icing and sprinkles these days. Think it’s time to go back to the Women’s Weekly cake books!

  • Everything is so expensive nowadays.

  • I don’t understand why that leaves costumers fuming, when you don’t like the price you simply don’t buy it

    Reply

  • I think that they are very cute and it costs a lot more to have a cake made by a cake maker. Great idea for those who are time poor and need a great looking cake.

  • What a great idea. Some very creative designs,.

    Reply

  • Definitely too expensive. But it’s always cheaper to make your own cake than to buy one.

    Reply

  • cute and great if you need a quick solution for a cake, however probably would be cheaper to make.
