Ready to swap the school run for the soothing waves of the sea? You’ve come to the right place. Pack your sun hats and your sense of adventure and book a family holiday with Carnival Cruise Line.

We’ve put together a complete guide to planning your dream family cruise, from choosing the right stateroom to the onboard activities and shore excursions on offer – and, of course, our destinations in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific.

Planning ahead means once you’re aboard, the only thing anyone will need to worry about is whether to hit the waterslide before or after Seaday Brunch. So, let’s get into it!

How to plan an epic family cruise holiday

There’s a reason why cruises are so popular for family holidays – they offer something for everyone, from adventure-lovers who want to pack their days full of activities, creative types who want to get crafty and come home with some handmade souvenirs, to those who just want some rest and relaxation in the sun.

How do you plan a family cruise holiday that everyone will remember? Start by choosing a destination (or two or three…) the whole family wants to visit and everyone’s must-do activities while onboard – Dive-in Movies, waterslides – and then find a cruise itinerary that ticks everything off the list. Easy!

On our ships, you’ll find clubs for kids and teensBroadway-style shows and even a luxurious day spa for parents looking for a bit of zen. And that’s without mentioning the incredible destinations – we’re talking places like the Great Barrier Reef, Fiji, Vanuatu – plus epic shore excursions, from kayaking to behind-the-scenes tours.

Choose a cruise line that checks all the boxes

Once you’ve decided where everyone wants to go and what everyone wants to do, it’s time to pick a cruise line. First of all, it’s important to start by looking at cruise lines that are designed for families, like Carnival.

It’s also important to look at which itineraries fit your dates and budget. Many dining, activities and entertainment options onboard are included as part of your fare, but there are some specialty dining experiences and onshore excursions that will cost extra, so make sure to factor those into your budget.

If you’ve got little ones, you’ll also need to make sure they can come along for the ride – most cruise lines don’t allow babies under six months for domestic cruises and under 12 months for international cruises.

Select the best stateroom configuration to keep everyone comfy at sea

Whether you’re travelling with toddlers, kids or teens – or even the grandparents – choosing the right stateroom will ensure everyone has the best experience at sea. Our flexible staterooms are available in loads of room configurations and can sleep up to four guests. If there’s more than four of you or you want to give the older kids (and yourselves) some extra space, our inter-connecting staterooms are a great option. And if you want an extra bathroom (and, let’s face it, who doesn’t?), our Deluxe Ocean View staterooms sleep up to five and come with an extra half-bath.

When you’re choosing your stateroom, think about where on the ship you’d like to stay. Interior rooms and rooms on the lower decks offer the best value. Midship staterooms are right at the centre of the action (and have extra elevators to get you where you’re going fast). A lot of aft and forward rooms offer expansive balconies and great views, while the upper decks give you easy access to the pools and entertainment.

No matter which stateroom you choose, they all come with great perks, including a dedicated stateroom attendant to take care of all the family’s cruising needs while you’re at sea, climate control to keep you all comfy, an in-room TV, safe, a charging port, plus loads of closet and drawer space so the whole family can settle in and unpack.

Plan your cruise around the school holidays

Make the most of your kids’ time off by booking a cruise over the school holidays. From long weekends to the summer break, there are plenty of itineraries that you can fit around your family’s schedule.

Our 10+ day cruises let you maximise the holiday break and spend the whole time at sea, so you and the kids can make the most of our onboard activities and entertainment, visit multiple destinations, and relax into cruise life.

If you’re after a shorter trip, choose one of our 6 to 9-day cruise itineraries, which give everyone plenty of time to explore all our ships have to offer, as well as ticking one or two must-do destinations off the bucket list.

And if you’re new to cruising or just after a quick getaway to rest and refresh, a 2 to 4-day getaway cruise could be just the ticket.

Book in early to score the best family cruise deals

Once you’ve decided which cruise is right for you, it’s time to book! Lock in your trip as soon as you’ve decided on your cruise to snag the best deals on family cruises.

We recommend booking nine months in advance – or more if you’re planning a cruise for the school holidays. It pays to make reservations for special dining experiences like Farenheit 555 or The Chef’s Table in advance, and book in your shore excursions early, so no one misses out on their must-dos.

While we always recommend making your booking early, don’t panic if you’ve made a spur-of-the-moment decision to take the family on a cruise – we offer loads of great last-minute deals, too.

Our kids club, Camp Ocean, is like a summer camp at sea. Our Penguin colony (for ages 2 to 5), plays Musical Icebergs, while our Stingrays (6 to 8), have fun designing their own aquariums. The Sharks (9 to 11) can play sea-themed soccer or paint the day away creating a giant ocean mural. Young teens (12 to 14) can hang out at Circle C for dance parties and movies, while 15 to 17 year olds can join Club O2 for video games or karaoke.

Of course, there’s plenty for adults to enjoy onboard as well. Get away from it all at our Cloud 9 Spa or the Adult-Only Serenity Retreat, enjoy a standup show just for grown-ups at the Punchliner Comedy Club, indulge in a mouth-watering meal at Fahrenheit 555^ or The Chef’s Table^ or sip on a crafted cocktail at Alchemy Bar. Plus, you can relax knowing the kids will be having a ball at Night Owls^ while you enjoy the onboard entertainment.

There’s plenty to enjoy together, too, from Family Feud Live and full-scale stage shows to digging into the best burgers you’ll find at sea with a meal at Guy’s Burger Joint

Learn more about the local culture of our destinations with shore excursions like our Melanisian Encounter in Lifou, where you’ll visit historic sites and try bougna, New Caledonia’s traditional dish. In Auckland, watch a performance of the Maori haka, made famous by the All Blacks.

For active adventurers, you could go zip lining in Fiji, explore the Tangalooma Shipwrecks by kayak, or race the family on Rotorua’s luge.

Sports fanatics will be racing down the gangplank for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, while Lord of the Rings fans will be making a bee-line for the Weta Workshop experience in Auckland.

No matter what shore excursion you want to do, we can’t say it enough – make sure you book in early so you don’t miss out!

  • We love cruising! It’s the best was to holiday. Everything is in the one spot and the food is non stop! We find the staff to always be friendly and amazing to deal with. Id you don’t feel like doing a tour off the ship, there still plenty to do on board!

  • I was pleasantly surprised when I went on my first cruise in my 50s. It was a great was to catch up with old friends over a week. Relaxing, enjoyable and very sociable. I am keen to organise a family one with our grandkids along as they are at a great age now to really enjoy it.

  • I am 34 years old and am sad to say that I have never been on a cruise! My little daughter turns 1 year old this year and I think going on a cruise would be a perfect family holiday for our little family. It seems like an ideal way to holiday now that we have a young one in tow!

  • Cruising with kids is the best way to holiday
Book a few on shore excursions for all of you to enjoy but don’t forget to take care of yourself as well
Whether it be special meals, or time in the day spa you might say “how do I do that with kids around?” That’s easy It’s called Kids Club
Your kids don’t want to be hanging around you all day every day and you won’t want to be watching them 24/7
I always found getting up and off to breakfast then sending the son off to Kids Club until lunch and then back to The Club until dinner worked great For a few nights I sent him off to the nightly shows for the kids
Super holidaying, both fun and relaxing for all parties
If you’ve never cruised before and you’re a bit nervous then try a 3-5 night cruise to test it out One good thing to add to you booking is a drinks package because then unless you’re doing things like the Captians Dinner or Chefs Table meals (they cost extra) you’ll know exactly what your trip will cost from the start

  • I love cruising, it is the easiest way to holiday in my opinion. So far I have done four days to Tasmania and 10 days to QLD & back with Carnival, Flown to Singapore and cruised Malaysia with Royal Caribbean and 11 days cruising the islands with P & O. Our next trip isn’t going to be on a cruise and I am actively delaying booking because the thought of organising flights, multiple hotels & destinations packing and unpacking at each one plus car hire etc is completely overwhelming

  • My family and I have never been on a cruise, my children have been askIng to though! I like the idea of a sort of cruise where there a lots of destination stops to get off the boat and stretch legs on the ground. We all have to start somewhere right?!

  • Another great reason to cruise with your family is if the kids get tired or too over it can just go back to the privacy of your cabin. Especially if you have a balcony cabin then you can still enjoy the scenic views and fresh air all while keeping an eye on the little ones at nap time.

  • I have only ever been on one cruise many years ago and I was unsure how I would go taking my 2 young children on one. This article and everyone’s comments have encouraged me to look into it again. I am looking forward to finding the perfect cruise for us! Adventure awaits.

  • Reading this article really makes me want to book another cruise again! Our last cruise was a 14 night to New Zealand with our 3 year old and it was the best experience. The next cruise I would love to do around Christmas time, but financially trying to wait for the best deals. When I booked for New Zealand it was during a massive promotional cost and we saved so much money then. Haven’t seen another deal like it since.

  • I tried doing a road trip in New Zealand with my 2 kids and that was bad enough. They fight like cat and dog and they can be just full on at times. I am not sure how we would go on a cruise when we would be in closer quarters.

  • We are actively planning to do a sample cruise within the next two years and it is all about finding the right fit for us. We are yet to land on a cruise that ticks all of the criteria we are searching for but we are getting closer to landing on the right one.

We absolutely love cruising as a family and cannot wait to go again so we can take advantage of the kids club and all of the other wonderful activities that are offered on board. So many fun things to do and stay entertained – my favourite way to holiday

  • I’ve never done a big cruise before (only the over night ones in vietnam) so this would be an imcredle experience and one the kids would never forget. I’d love to keep saving to take my family on a holiday like this. The article makes me so excited for a family cruise

  • I love cruising. It’s my favourite way to holiday. Just pack and get on board and just about everything else is taken care of. The only other things to think about is excursions (or not) at each port.

  • Cruises really are the holiday that make the whole family happy. There’s something on board for everyone, day trips and excursions that will excite, and more food than you could ever want. And drinks packages that will make a lot of parents happy. Carnival Cruise Line have a beautiful fleet. I loved selling their cruises, they make it effortless to show how magical the holiday will be.

  • Cruises always look so appealing and it would be so lovely to go on a cruise with the weather becoming cooler. I do like the idea of starting with shorter cruises and sampling them to see if they fit with the family. It is definitely about finding the right cruise for our family.
