Parents are being urged to make sure popular pop-it fidget toys are being kept out of the reach of toddlers, after one aunty’s painful discovery.
As shared by Tiny Hearts Education, Kendall Kemezis was holding her nephew when she spotted something in his mouth.
“I saw a bit of pink in his mouth so I investigated further and saw what I thought was a gum-ball. My sister felt it and realised it was rubber so she pulled at it and this piece of the toy had broken off somehow and it suctioned to his top gums.”
When she had found was a circular, rubber part of a pop-it fidget toy, wedged and suctioned onto a part of the toddler’s gums, causing swelling.
“We’re lucky it ended this way and not in him choking. We just wanted to inform others that these toys can have faulty parts as this piece must have broken off and fallen on the floor for the baby to have gotten it.
“He is fine and the swelling immediately went down and he’s back to normal. It’s my suggestion to check these toys if you have them in the house and make sure they are of good quality.”
Many other parents responded to the post, saying they’d had similar concerns with the toys.
“We chucked all ours out a while ago because my 10 month old at the time was biting those parts off. She could get them off in seconds,” one mum commented.
It’s a timely reminder if you have older children with these sensory toys to make sure they’re well out of the reach of any younger siblings.
