°These delectable treats are the perfect shortcut to tackling a doughnut craving, without any need for hot oil or making dough. And they’re so easy the kids can make them!

Flaky pastry, spiced Kanzi apples, and a touch of sweetness, these doughnuts are pure comfort in every bite.

Adding Kanzi apples is the secret to elevating pastries and pies from good to amazing! The delicious balance of sweet and tangy flavours in Kanzi apples make them ideal for baking. Sweet, complex and moreish – not too sugary, just like in these Puff Pastry KANZI® Apple ‘Doughnuts’.

The delicious sweet and tangy flavour of Kanzi apples make them perfect for sweet treats and baking, as unlike other tart varieties of apples, there’s less need for added sugar.

Ingredients (makes 10-15 )

  • 2 large KANZI® apples
  • 1 puff pastry sheet, thawed at room temperature for 5 - 10 minutes
  • 2 tbsp white sugar
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp water (cool or room temperature)

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C.
  2. On a clean chopping board, slice the Kanzi apples horizontally through the core into slices approximately 0.5cm thick, yielding about 10-15 slices.
  3. Use a small cookie cutter to remove the cores from the Kanzi apple slices, forming a doughnut ring shape.
  4. Combine the white sugar and ground cinnamon in a shallow bowl.
  5. Dip each Kanzi apple ring into the cinnamon-sugar mixture, ensuring they're evenly coated.
  6. Cut the puff pastry into strips roughly 2cm wide using a knife.
  7. Wrap each Kanzi apple ring with the puff pastry strips. You'll need about 3 strips per Kanzi apple ring for complete coverage, or 2 strips to leave some gaps. Place each ring onto a lined baking tray.
  8. Lightly beat the egg with the water, then brush it over the puff pastry. Sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon-sugar on top.
  9. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the puff pastry turns a golden-brown colour.
  10. Serve immediately, dusted with icing sugar

  • Oh my – these look so yummy.

Nothing like freshly baked puff pastry with warm apple filling.

My friend gave me a pre mix sugar and cinnamon blend so this would work perfectly for this recipe.

Perfect for an afternoon tea treat on cold day like today topped with dollop (or two!) of cream.

  • I love this idea. What a delicious and fun treat this would be. Apples and pastry with cinnamon sounds Devine. The recipe looks quite easy to make with not too many ingredients. I would make this for a wintery weekend treat on a rainy day when you are spending the day at home. I bet it would make your house smell amazing too.

  • Wow! This is just so clever!! I never would have even thought to make an ‘apple donut’ but the ingredients are so incredibly simple and easy to do. It is even better when you can make it a single serving. There is nothing worse than wanting something sweet and then having lots of naughty leftovers!

  • We do love to eat a variety of different apples. We like to buy apples because they are easy to pack in lunchboxes and bags and are portable too. Apples are good for snacking and for using in a variety of recipes. This recipe would have to be a favourite one due to the simplicity and also ‘wow’ factor.

  • Simple and easy ! I quite often make an puff pastry apple packet, but prefer not to use sugar. The sweetness of the apple together with the cinnamon is really sweet enough. And without the sugar it’s also more suitable for breakfast, after school or after dinner snack Kanzi apples are lovely, but any apple would work really.

  • I do like to make desserts that are made with pastry and they are particularly good to eat during the cooler months of the year. I do like the simplicity of this this recipe and the end result, a delicious looking puff pastry apple doughnut served with vanilla bean ice cream will be on the menu soon.

  • These look delicious, and I already have everything at home! KANZI are my absolute favourite apples. They are as crisp as a granny smith and sweeter than any other apple I’ve tried. I haven’t cooked with them yet because they never last long enough in the fruit bowl. I’ll be trying this out tomorrow with my toddler for a healthier treat for the house.
