Looking for a comforting winter dinner the whole family can enjoy? IGA Corned Silverside is an Aussie favourite to cook up at home!

When the weather cools down, families tend to crave something warming and hearty, and IGA Corned Silverside is just the thing. Ready to cook, it is cured in a traditional brine that helps keep the meat deliciously moist while creating the distinctive flavour and pink colour silverside is known for.

Corned Silverside is a trusted winter go-to because it doesn’t require a lot of fuss. Just pop it on the stove and let it simmer away low and slow. The result is tender, tasty beef, ready to slice and serve piping hot with your favourite sides. Better yet, any leftovers are perfect for sandwiches, wraps and toasties the next day.

Affordable, easy to prepare and packed with good old-fashioned comfort, it’s easy to see why silverside remains a favourite in so many Australian homes.

I love how simple & easy silverside is to cook. This meat was beautiful. There was no fat on it. It was a great cut of meat! The flavour was mouth watering. I will definitely be purchasing meat from iga in the future. I highly encourage others to get down to their local iga !

  • Throughly enjoyed it

I loved it. I remember eating this as a kid, my mum would boil it. I decided to try something different and cooked it in the slow cooker. It was moist and delicious even my husband and son (10) loved it and asked for more (and they’ve tried my mum’s before and didn’t like it). Value for money as we had quite a bit leftover and had more for dinner the next night and 2 lunches out of it. Will differently be buying again.

  • A family favourite!

    This was absolutely beautiful!

Once I purchased the silverside from IGA I cooked it the following day. I put it in the slow cooker in the morning on low all day with onions and garlic cloves. It smelt amazing in the house as it cooked. When we had it for dinner it was so tender and perfectly cooked, I served it with mashed potatoes, cheesy vegetables and a nice white sauce. It was an absolute favourite and the kids loved it too!!

  • Easy peasy winter corned beef from IGA.

One of the best warmer meals, or just general family dinners, is a slow cooked corned beef (silverside).

I recently picked up a nice slice of corned beef from my local IGA and prepared at home, which was a family favourite (even for my very picky toddler and 4 year old). IGA had such a large selection to choose from, and it is super simple to grab on the go and then prepare at home for a budget friendly and flavoursome dinner!

    The recipe is simple:

    1x corned beef (approx 1.2-1.8kg)

    1 cup of brown vinegar

    1 cup of brown sugar

    2-4 bay leaves

    6 black peppercorns

    2-4 diced carrots

    1 quartered large onion.

Mix all the ingredients together in your pot and then fill with water to above the top of the beef. I use a slow cooker and cook for a minimum of 6 hours (you can also stove top cook on medium heat for 5-6 hours).

Once cooked, simply remove and drain from the pot (you can also use the pickled carrot and onion as a side) and accompany with your choice of sauce. Cheese sauce is the best option!

Super simple and yummy dinner sorted. Flavoursome and a hearty meal for the whole family to enjoy!

  • Delicious and so easy!

I’ve waited to cook this until I was visiting my grandkids to get a 3 generational opinion. The kids lapped it up, which is quite a high rating. It’s difficult to get them to consume enough protein. We adults all enjoyed it. Cooked in a slow cooker with vegetables. It was a little tough in parts but the flavour was great. I recall silverside has always been a little tough, going all the way back to my childhood. It was a very economical meal. When I purchased it, it was on special for $10/kg. It will feed all of us at least twice.

    4 stars for me!

  • Nice winter warmer meal

We were lucky to try out the corned beef from IGA. It was $10 kg on special at the time so great value for money.

We haven’t bought or cooked this ourselves before so we looked up online how to and tried the boiling method. I think next time we might try the slow cooker and see how that goes instead.

When we dished it up, it was nice and salty and had a good flavor. Although some bits were a bit fatty and we had to cut them off. The next few bits we tried were tender and tasty.

I made a simple mustard sauce to go with it which paired well. Such a great easy meal for the winter months which warms you up and keeps you full.

  • Really good value

We have brought a lot of cornbeef from other supermarkets and the one we purchased from IGA would be almost one of the best we have had. The flavour and size was brilliant for the price we paid. We will definitely be buying from IGA again. This easily feed a family of 4 with leftovers

  • Simple and easy dinner

As a busy single mum of 4, I like to shortcut as much as possible. I put my silverside in the slow cooker with ginger ale, and cooked for approx 6 hours. It was perfectly cooked, nice pink colour and sliced beautifully. I served it in brioche hot dog rolls with a fresh kaleslaw salad & dressing. Quick, easy and satisfying! Great silverside, thanks Mouths of Mums :)

  • Memories of a childhood favourite

Loved that the timing of this review lined up with the product being on special and the weather turning colder.

Was able to get a piece large enough to easily feed 3 with plenty left over for cold cuts and corned beef hash.

Made it the way I remembered having it growing up, including the essential mustard sauce.

The piece I bought had been butchered a little bit, needed a tidy up and trim of cartilage and excess fat.

Cooked it how I always have and got a good result like I expected; it may be common with corned beef now, but it lacked any intensity of flavour, like a watered-down version of how corned beef used to taste.

Not terrible enough to not recommend or buy again, just made me aware of how much flavour I needed to add to supplement it.

Great buy for budget conscious shoppers, recreating a loved classic or trying something new.

  • Easy weekday dinner

Thai corned silveeside was such an easy meal to cook in the middle of the week. The meat was amazing not fatty at all but unfortunately it was way too salty and this kind of made it really hard to eat. Not sure we would buy this again from IGA.

  • Was very tasty

This IGA corned silverside has a great flavour, good texture, and is excellent value for money. It’s just as good as, if not better than, some of the more expensive brands I’ve tried. I’ll definitely be buying it again. I unfortunately didn’t manage to get a photo of the cooked meat as my family dug into it way too quickly, but can guarantee that it was absolutely worth the money!

  • Just delicious silverside

I bought a beautiful large 1.6 kilo piece of corned silverside from my local IGA at Baringa Qld. It was on special at $16.28. Slow cooked it with the only other ingredient from IGA being ginger ale (easy peasy). Complimented with steamed veges and corn, it was so comforting on a winter’s night, absolutely delicious.

  • Great Winter Meal for the Whole Family

IGA’s Raw Silverside has a great taste and texture, firm but not chewy. I cooked mine in a pressure cooker and served it with mashed potato, peas and white sauce, the family loved it.

It is great value for money which means it doesn’t have to be served as a one off luxury meal this Winter.

I bought a 1.5kg piece which was enough for dinner and leftovers over for a second meal. Any thoughts I had of serving it again the next night were dashed by lunchtime the following day when there were multiple requests for silverside and pickle sandwiches.

  • Flavourful and a nice nourishing meal

This silverside was well priced and flavourful. I did however, find the piece I purchased to have a far bit of gristle making it slightly tough. Despite this, it was still enjoyable and had a much nicer flavour than other varieties I have tried. A nice winter meal for the whole family, simply place in a slow cooker on low and set and forget. Great for leftovers too, very much enjoyed cold on sandwiches the next day.

Mum-of-two Rebecca McCracken has spent the last four years reading ingredient lists on pretty much everything she buys at the supermarket.

Like many parents raising kids with food allergies, a quick trip to the supermarket often means checking labels, comparing products and hoping to find something the whole family can eat.

Bec’s four-year-old son and 17-month-old daughter were both born with cow’s milk protein allergy. While her son has since outgrown his allergies, her toddler still reacts to dairy, making even everyday staples like bread a challenge.

“Unless we buy expensive sourdough for seven or eight dollars, we don’t really have a choice.”

Even then, it’s not ideal.

“A kid doesn’t want to eat a sourdough sandwich,” Bec laughs. “And fairy bread on sourdough is not great.”

A New Loaf On The Block

Bec runs an online community for allergy families, so she spends plenty of time sharing recipes, product finds and supermarket discoveries with other parents.

It was one of those parents who first told her about new JUST bread.

“A follower messaged me and said, ‘Oh my gosh, this bread is coming soon.’ I was like, ‘Where? When? I need to know. I’m getting my car keys and running!'”

Made with baker’s flour, water, yeast, vinegar, oil and salt, JUST bread contains no artificial preservatives, flavours or colours.

For Bec, it sounded almost too good to be true. “When we saw JUST bread, I was like, ‘You’re joking.’ A bread that’s fresh baked but in the bread aisle? That’s unheard of for us.”

“It was really exciting for our family and for the allergy community.”

The Family’s Toughest Critic Approved

Of course, there was one person whose opinion mattered more than anyone else’s.

“My toughest critic is my daughter. She is so fussy. We know something is really good if she approves it, and she approves it. She loves it. She’ll eat it plain, toasted, as French toast … whatever. She loves it.”

Bec says she was impressed too.

“I like it. I like that it’s only got minimal ingredients and doesn’t have the additives and preservatives that are in a lot of other brands.”

A Simpler Option For Everyday Families

Bec tried out JUST bread because of her family’s allergies, but she says it has a broader appeal.

“I think everyone is becoming more conscious of additives and preservatives in their food.”

It’s a feeling many of us can probably relate to. We don’t all want to overhaul the way we eat, but plenty of us are paying a little more attention to ingredient lists and looking for products that keep things simple.

Bread is one of those foods that’s always around. It ends up in lunchboxes, on the breakfast table, alongside soup on a cold night and covered in hundreds and thousands at birthday parties. When we eat something that often, it’s only natural to wonder what’s in it.

JUST bread keeps things simple with a handful of pantry ingredients and no artificial preservatives, flavours or colours. It’s the sort of loaf that fits easily into busy family life without asking us to compromise on taste or convenience.

Little Changes, Big Difference

For Bec, finding a loaf of bread her whole family can enjoy is about more than ticking another item off the shopping list.

“It seems like such a little thing to the normal community, but for us this is a massive win.”

Being able to make sandwiches without worrying about ingredients. Packing lunchboxes a little more easily. Bringing back fairy bread for birthdays. Sometimes it’s the little things that make family life feel a whole lot simpler.

And while Bec found JUST bread because she needed another allergy-friendly option, its simple ingredient list is likely to appeal to plenty of other families too. After all, when we can choose everyday foods made with ingredients we recognise, that’s a pretty good place to start.

JUST Bread is made on a line that also processes soy and sesame.

Mouths of Mums is proudly working with JUST. to bring you this article. JUST bread is made with just a handful of pantry ingredients.  JUST. The Good Stuff.

  • It’s at a good price point for families on a tight budget and is “cleaner” but missing the mark with Canola oil . I wouldn’t be running to a supermarket for it but it’s alot better than other varieties on the market. It’s nice to see supermarkets are at least trying and listening

    Reply

  • Most breads are dairy free anyway so I am surprised by this article. Additive free is a bonus. I always go for a grain bread nowadays and have the kids eating it too so I’ll be sticking with that. It’s always great to have variety out there though for the ones that need it.

  • We bought this bread from the supermarket and it is a good price for bread which of course can indeed be expensive. Each slice is a good size and our favourite meal to create and eat with this bread is cheese toasties. The bread holds and is good to eat.

  • I am so glad to hear about this and will definitely be on a look out for this in the supermarket. I have noticed that there are starting to be more ‘cleaner’ products in the supermarket, meaning consumers are being heard. We are going full circle back to how foods use to be produced before companies got greedy and started taking shortcuts to producing food items. I hope we continue seeing more preservative and additive free options that are affordable come back in the supermarkets.

  • Grabbing your car keys and running for a bread ?? I can’t imagine doing so for a bread lol ! It’s nice to see that more and more allergy friendly products are being produced and put on the market.
I don’t agree with the statement that “A kid doesn’t want to eat a sourdough sandwich”. It depends on what type of bread you introduce to your kids. My kids grew up with 7 seeds, rustic bread and sourdough and they love it. It’s also quite easy and cheap to make sourdough bread yourself.

  • I haven’t seen this bread in the supermarket but will be looking for it now. I have been trying to avoid preservatives and additives for some time now and as highlighted in the article bread it difficult to find, or super expensive, without them so I don’t have it often.

  • This is fantastic, finally a bread that is not full of nasty stuff. I will be going straight out to buy this. My son has ARFID and will only eat white bread, but it’s not terribly healthy. With this bread, at least I know that it is much healthier than the alternatives. Woohoo
