Shelly became a household name right from the start of her TV career, when she was just 18 as a presenter on Saturday Disney.

“I do count my lucky stars every day with the jobs I’ve been given. However, I did used to have to shuffle manure at Movie World at times…,” she laughs.

“The TV presenting roles have all been fun roles and no one has demanded too much of me. I just have to be myself and hope that I say something reasonably intelligent.”

This year was Shelley’s seventh series on The Block.

“The best part about working on this show is seeing the creativity and the real hard work people are prepared to put in to get the best out of themselves.

“The series has shown hard work can pay off and it gives the competitors the opportunity to start a life they wish – be it in interior design or doing something else. Like Brad and Lara for example, they bought a pub in Newcastle – and it’s really great to see that TV can be used for good instead of evil.”

Her latest project is a far cry away from the drama of The BlockShelley is now one half of a band for kids, Animals Rock, with the act’s focus being on opening children’s eyes and ears up to the wide world of animals.

“Beau Young [the other half of Animals Rock] came to my daughter Milla’s daycare a few years back to perform some tracks and she couldn’t stop raving about the performance. So I bought Beau’s album, and Eadie [Shelly’s three-year-old daughter] loved it too.

I saw something really special in it and wanted to be a part of it.” Shelly and Beau will continue touring, and are now tied with Universal Music and ABC Kids.

  • That’s fantastic! Anything that teaches our kids how to be with animals has gotta be a winner. We need to get to them young and hopefully stop some of the animal abuse and neglect
