Earlier this week we shared the story of a birth photographer who told a mum-to-be that having a c-section was not giving birth and she therefore would not photograph for her.
Reports have said her words were “You aren’t giving birth. You have a surgery to [take] your baby from your abdomen. That is not birth no matter how you swing it and I for one don’t want to be there to take pictures of it”.
Obviously mums all over the World would object … and did. Here at MoM HQ we’re all of the mind that it doesn’t matter where your baby comes out of your body, it’s all giving birth to your child.
After we ran this story, we were contacted by Australia’s top birth photographer, Selena Rollason from Brisbane Birth Photography who felt that on behalf of Birth Photographers she had to set the record straight. She told us she is shocked and outraged that a birth photographer refused to document a C-section birth.
Selena, who currently holds the title of Australia’s Professional Birth Photographer of the year, says this photographer’s approach goes against “everything that birth photography professionals believe and do”.
“Birth Photographers are incredibly passionate about photographing all types of birth”
Birth Photographers love when we are given the opportunity to step into theatre to capture caesarean sections” she says.
“We believe strongly that a caesarean birth is not only a very real and wonderful way to give birth but that the photos produced from a C-section are important for the families to process and heal from a birth outcome that they aren’t usually wanting” she says.
“A professional birth photographer would never suggest to a potential client that a caesarean section is not a real way to give birth. This situation certainly illustrates the importance of choosing your birth photographer carefully and that picking a registered professional when looking for birth photos is the best way to go.”
Mrs Rollason won the award of Australia’s Top Birth Photographer with her images of a C-section birth. Her stunning images are shared below.
