Hello!

When I was cleaning out a cupboard recently, I found this poem. I had written it a week after having my gorgeous little dog put to sleep a couple of years ago. I found that writing down thoughts and feelings was a good way to express and work through my grieving.

TODAY’S THE DAY …

A week ago I held you close,
And whispered in your ear,
I told you that I loved you so,
I prayed that you could hear.

I stroked your fur so gently,
I didn’t want to say Goodbye,
I kissed you softly on your nose,
All I could do was cry.

You were so ill and struggling,
I knew that it was time to let you go,
My Light, my Love, my Darling Heart,
Even before you died it hurt me so.

So many years, such happiness,
Your unconditional love,
You rescued me and gave me joy,
My gift from Heaven above.

I spoke to you of all we’d shared,
Fourteen treasured and precious years,
You raised your head and licked my cheek,
You tried to dry my tears.

Your beautiful brown eyes looked into mine,
As if you were trying to say,
“Mummy, I love you so, and I’ll miss you too,
But you know today’s the day.

You love me too much to keep me here,
For my time on Earth is through,
Help me on my journey to Rainbow Bridge,
Though it hurts, it’s what you must do.”

As you slipped away to that special place,
Where you’d be young and healthy again,
I thanked God for my most blessed gift,
Muffy the Wonder Dog, my very best friend.

  • A beautiful poem. I dread the day our beloved furbaby goes to his new home at Rainbow Bridge.

  • It is a beautiful poem. I’m very much a dog lover and believe that dogs are very good judges of character and can feel our moods and know just when to give us a cuddle or nuzzle us. This sounds awful but at times it would be nice if some humans I met had the personalities of some dogs I’ve loved. Dogs are wonderful and give unconditional love.

    • Totally agree with you there, Heidi. Like the sayings go … “The more I see of the world, the more I prefer my dog”, and “If more people had hearts and souls like so many dogs, what a wonderful place the world would be”.

  • Thanks, ArcticWynta. Yes, Muffy was my darling, and saw me through some very tough times. If not for her, I wouldn’t be here. She stopped me from choosing a permanent solution to a temporary problem, when depression had me ready to throw my life away.

    • I’m also very glad that Muffy was your saviour and is truly a wonderful dog to bring you back from the grips of despair.
