Some dinners instantly transport us back to childhood … the familiar smells, the comforting routines. The meals that appeared on the table week after week.

For many Aussie families, that meal was corned silverside.

There are many of us who still have fond memories of mum or dad cooking silverside on a Sunday, followed by silverside sandos for school that week with the leftovers.

We recently gave Mouths of Mums members a chance to test out IGA Corned Silverside, and one thing became clear: many mums are rediscovering the humble family dinner they hadn’t cooked in years and introducing it to a whole new generation.

"I hadn't bought silverside in years until this review challenge. I used to enjoy it at Nan's as a kid, but sort of forgot about it. I will definitely be purchasing it more regularly now."

More Than Just a Trip Down Memory Lane

For many mums, cooking corned silverside wasn’t simply about recreating a meal from childhood.

It was about discovering that a traditional family dinner like this still works well today, even though we’re busier than ever.

Review after review mentioned the same things: popping it in the slow cooker before the school run, letting it cook while life carried on around them, then sitting down to a meal that fed the whole family with plenty left over.

"The corned silverside was easy to prepare in my slow cooker, popped it in and forgot about it till it was dinner time."

Many mums also mentioned one of the best parts came the next day. Leftover corned silverside tucked into fresh sandwiches isn’t just practical, it’s another wave of nostalgia.

For plenty of Aussie families, lunchbox sandwiches filled with slices of leftover silverside were every bit as memorable as the dinner itself. Across the reviews, sandwiches were mentioned multiple times, with many mums saying leftovers became lunch the following day.

IGA Silverside

What is corned silverside?

Corned silverside is a salt-cured cut of beef, almost always made from the the cow's hindquarter. It's lean and affordable, has a mild flavour and is beautifully tender when cooked slowly. This can either be done by simmering it slowly in water, vinegar, brown sugar and spices on the stove top or in the slow cooker.

The Memories Came Flooding Back

While convenience was a pleasant surprise, it was the memories that gave many reviews their emotional heart.

"It also brought back a lot of memories from my childhood, as silverside was something we regularly had growing up."

Passing It On

Perhaps the most interesting insight wasn’t just that mums have rediscovered corned silverside. It’s that many are now sharing it with their own children and grandchildren.

"I've waited to cook this until I was visiting my grandkids to get a 3 generational opinion. The kids lapped it up..."

"My whole family enjoyed this meal. It was quite nostalgic for me with many childhood memories of being served this for dinner... Everyone ate it even my two fussy kids!"

For many mums, corned silverside isn’t simply bringing back memories, it’s helping create new ones.

A Meal Worth Rediscovering

Not every reviewer grew up loving corned silverside and not everyone had cooked it before. But one theme kept emerging.

Families were pleasantly surprised by just how well this classic dinner fitted into modern life. Slow-cooker friendly, generous enough to stretch into tomorrow’s sandwiches, and capable of bringing three generations around the same table, it reminded many reviewers why it had become such a staple in Australian homes in the first place.
