A Sydney cafe has been criticised online over a “deconstructed” sandwich.

The sandwich requires customers to assemble it themselves for  a whopping cost of $17.

Reddit user MiloXF shared a picture of the sandwich served in a cardboard box with two slices of bread, some sliced ham, avocado, tomato and a strawberry.

The Reddit user wrote that their cousin ordered the meal from a cafe in Sydney but didn’t state which one.

As one person stated “If I wanted to make a sandwich myself I would have stayed at home and done it.”

  • That’s just weird. I’m a foodie but have never heard of anyone receiving something like this (or had the experience) when ordering something called a “sandwich”.
Curious as to which Cafe it was!

  • Some places don’t have their prices listed properly so it is very easy to get caught the first time it happens. I heard of a similar case that was 2 slices of toast with advocado spread. She was given really cold toast with an advocado partially cut through – not even in halves. She was refused even a partial refund. It was at a place where you paid before they make and serve the food. She was travelling and didn’t know the local area at all. Needless to say the lady told all her friends and work colleagues about her experience. No doubt more people told others too.

  • I would take my business elsewhere.

  • hmmmm I wouldn’t be happy with doing it myself if I was expecting it to be made for me, but if it said deconstructed sandwich and they knew then they can’t really complain can they?! I don’t know who would pay that much for a sandwich anyway! That’s just silly

  • Why buy it when you don’t like it ?
Looking at the picture I wonder what’s with the pickle ? and where is it swimming in ?

  • If it’s advertised as deconstructed you know what you’re getting but it’s more than I would be willing to pay for a sandwich.

  • Don’t like it – don’t buy it.

  • Nope, I would complain. Mind you, that’s a lot for any kind of sandwich.

  • It will be a fad for a while, then replaced by something else. I wouldn’t buy it at that price for sure.

  • Quite simply, I wouldn’t buy it. Let alone pay $17. Who would pay that?

  • That’s just simply ridiculous. I wouldn’t go there. Looks silly too.

  • That’s beyond ridiculous. If the menu didn’t specify it would come like that I’d would have walked out and not paid for it. You ask for a sandwich, pay for a sandwich they’d better give a sandwich not a pile of ingredients. $17 is way too expensive for something you have to assemble yourself.

  • I wouldn’t even pay that if they made it for me!

  • No way would I buy a fully made sandwich for this price, let alone have to make it myself.
This takes the modern cooking shows deconstruction of foods – tooooooo far!

  • Wow m, firstly a sandwich for $17, it just has to be amazing but one I have to create myself, no thanks

  • Tooo pricey for me. Wondering what the menu actually stated when she purchased it though. ?

    Reply

  • “Some assembly required, but we’ll charge you premium for that”
    Um, no thanks

    Reply

  • I personally like the idea but would definitely not pay the price stated.

  • It’s expensive but I guess they’re trying to do something different and trying to make it fashionable.
