A Sydney cafe has been criticised online over a “deconstructed” sandwich.

The sandwich requires customers to assemble it themselves for  a whopping cost of $17.

Reddit user MiloXF shared a picture of the sandwich served in a cardboard box with two slices of bread, some sliced ham, avocado, tomato and a strawberry.

The Reddit user wrote that their cousin ordered the meal from a cafe in Sydney but didn’t state which one.

As one person stated “If I wanted to make a sandwich myself I would have stayed at home and done it.”

  • If people pay the money they will sell the goods.

  • It would cost a lot less if the sandwich came all ready to eat with no construction needed. This is ridiculous but I bet a lot of people would love the ifea

  • Thing is that when this sandwich would have been prepared, it might well have turned soggy when delivered. Personally I never order a sandwich, far to expensive and I make better ones myself.

  • looks nice, but minus the outrageous price tag.

  • Wow that’s just a bit too ridiculous

  • Appalling that there is only one gherkin in that box!!!! I hate have to construct anything myself food wise that I have paid for. When you work out the cost of ingredients and staff labour, they are making a motza! So not cool, especially if you didn’t know it was going to be diy.

  • Not something I would buy – I want my sandwich constructed!

  • An pricey sandwich that you have to put together yourself,no thanks!

  • its the average price of a sandwich in Sydney.

  • If you don’t like the price then don’t order it?

  • It looks like it would be a tastey sandwich. But who in their right mind would pay $17 for a sandwich?! And to make it worse, it’s a sandwich you have to put together yourself. No thanks, I still prefer to make my own at home.

  • Who is buying it? There’s obviously a market for overpriced sandwiches and other food. They won’t charge it if u don’t buy it!

    • Good point – some people do like their food to look like this – personal preference – but not for me.

  • I would not buy this deconstructed sandwich anyway! When I eat out I like my food constructed on the plate – then I do the demolishing (deconstructing!) 😉

  • It’s the cost I find offensive. For $17.00 you can buy a whole loaf of bread and most of the ingredients and make yourself at least 10 sandwiches.

  • Very expensive. But nowadays eating a sandwich outside is always expensive. 🙁

  • I would make it at home it will look more appealing and appetising

  • It’s Sydney. Say no more about the cost! $10 is about average for a sandwich, extra for avocado. Looks like a lot of meat and nice bread. If I wanted to make it myself though, I’d make it at home.

  • Hipsters. That is why this is a thing. $17 for a sandwich, whether made or not, is ridiculous. Excuse me while I go to Woolworths and grab enough for 5+ sandwiches for this price.

  • It’s a gimmick. Those ingredients are expensive and to cut them up. But no way I’d pay $17 for that.

  • I think after the initial shock I would be woohoo I can stack it and make it however I like or stack all the ingredients on the bread and eat with a knife and fork. Price is a bit rich tho for a diy sandwich isn’t IKEA cheaper because you do it yourself? Hmmm go figure!!
