Kate Lauren Designs was founded by Julie Parianos in October 2010 after she decided to pursue her passion for interior design and décor. As a mother of three, Julie relished the opportunity to create a mix of fresh, timeless and elegant collections for children’s rooms.

Julie had the idea to start her business after she renovated her bathrooms and researched products for the renovation online. Julie found countless stunning pieces and ended up importing her bathroom lighting from the U.S. The shipping alone cost almost as much as the lights themselves. That’s when Julie seriously considered setting up her own online interiors company, creating her own designs and sourcing beautiful items from around the globe.

Julie says “the leap into starting my own business was huge and very scary, you put everything you have into this wonderful idea and there’s always that possibility of it not working out.” Julie started Kate Lauren Designs, naming it after her eldest daughter, in the hope of creating beautiful pieces and being wildly successful. And even with three children, Julie always coordinated her time perfectly so all aspects of her life got her attention and care. “It is definitely a challenge to start a business and give it all you have with young children who need to be picked up from school and have their lunches made, organisation is undeniably key.”

Julie started by deciding to name each collection after either her own children or her children’s friends.  Their stories are real stories and Julie has tried to capture the essence of their characters through the designs and stories that accompany them. Starting a business can be tough, but involving family into your business can bring new depths of creativity and ideas. “Always have your family first, if you can, try and combine the two worlds in a way that is professional and also keeps your family close and involved” says Julie.

Julie made it key in the beginning to stay true to her original ideas and roots, to create pieces that came from the heart and made a child’s bedroom a space to be themselves and feel safe. Each collection is diligently and carefully designed and developed by Julie drawing on classic, enduring and romantic colours, textures, patterns and styles. From this originality and truthfulness, Julie’s collections have gained massive success and continue to inspire. Her company runs on ethical behaviour and designing items that are almost made for the customer specifically.

Integrating business with family is challenging, especially when you’re just beginning and need your space and time to create magic.  Julie says that “creating a routine is also very important, designating certain times were its strictly business, that way you are interrupted less often and get a lot of work done!”

  • Being successful in life means different things to different people. Some have successful educations or careers, some see themselves as successful when they buy a home. I was successful when I first became a mum, I finally found my calling
