Teachers are sharing the worst school lunches they have seen including a cold maccas happy meal and a red bull drink with corn chips.

Teachers have revealed that a child once turned up to school with a day-old McDonald’s Happy Meal that had a cold burger and fries inside.

“Shame for it to go to waste,” the kid said to the teacher explaining his ‘Gran’ had bought it for him the day before but he didn’t want it at the time.

Too Tired

In another instance, a student came to school with simply a packet of ginger biscuits as that was all they could find in the pantry after saying their mum had simply been “too tired” to go shopping.

Another teacher shared how one parent gave their kid a can of Red Bull and a packet of corn snacks after, “He’d had a late night on his Xbox and seemed like he needed a pick-me-up.”

Another example, a primary school pupil had turned up with only a pork pie and a can of shandy for lunch.

It was also revealed that an eight-year-old once came to school with a can of Dark Fruit Cider, unaware that it contained alcohol.

The worst lunches

A teacher told of the time one student had arrived with no packed lunch or any money for food.

The teacher then asked if he had had any breakfast, to which he said he had cereal with water as “Mum needed the milk for her coffee”.

“I’m not ashamed to say I cried when he told me that,” the teacher said when she posted about this experience.

Sadly this happens all too often.

What is your guilty lunchbox treat?

  • As a teacher I feel that teachers should not be commenting publicly about this. Although no identifying features are written there are some specific details that a parent may recognize. Teacher’s thoughts on this should either be kept to themselves, or if they thought there were serious health issues then talk to the parent, principal or authorities.

  • Sounds like these kids come from homes where the parents don’t care for the kids and only about themselves. Or could be from alcoholics, drug users, they need to be reported for assistance especially bringing alcohol or caffeinated drinks for primary school.

  • I feel very sad for these kids too, but my thought is that when there is money for this type of junk, then there is also money for a loaf of bread and more.

  • The pictures shows no food but junk. It’s sad that parents consider this to be a lunch or consider this a treat.

  • This is quiet sad, but maybe the teachers could help a little before judging…these meals might be coming due to lack of education or mental health.

  • It’s sad what some kids have and wished that schools provided options for the vulnerable

    Reply

  • Not a lot of healthy options here!

    • That is so sad to hear. It would be good if all kids had free access to fresh fruit or salads at school.

  • That is so sad….taking milk away from kid to have it to own coffee…really?

    • Yes, putting yourself above the care of your children sure is a sad thing.

  • Some of these sound very awful and saddening to hear!

  • Cold meat pie still in the plastic.
Pasta and sauce just thrown into the whole lunchbox with an apple.

  • There are some clear parental fails here, but some make you wonder what else the parents must be dealing with.

Maybe that mum has a medical condition?

      • My apologies, I was going to agree with your comment but I couldn’t see how to reply so I decided to write another comment of my own and it actually did tag onto yours! 🙂

  • Wow eye opener that some children just have it so hard

  • I do feel for these children – and once again, surely these foods although bad are better than nothing! These parents aren’t going to change to all these healthy ideas and if the children don’t eat these then they will be going hungry.

  • Oh dear how heartbreaking for the kids that experience this and how do the poor teachers deal with seeing this. I bet they want to help every kid but can’t.
My daughters gets a basic lunch box no guilty items, but I’ve been called out for feeding her Nutella on toast for breakfast before sending her to school as it’s not nutritious… she dobbed on me by the way

  • So sad to know that these kids go without food for school. I have several busy mornings which is why I spend the night before preparing for decent lunches for my children so they don’t go without.

  • That is so sad for those kids. I wish schools had a stock of fruits, salads and simple sandwiches to offer kids who really need it. Maybe they could get fresh food from oz harvest or second bite to help out.

  • So sad to hear what some children are given for lunches 🙁 My guilty lunchbox treat can be a mini chocolate or a packet of mini chips. I make sure my children have a bottle of water and a packed lunch everyday. I do it at night time as it’s easier for me then in the busy mornings.

  • So sad. It breaks my heart when little ones miss out.

  • It doesn’t take a lot of effort to pack a healthy lunch. Shame on those parents who can’t be bothered.
