Hello!

A teenage girl has spent an eye-watering amount on mobile games, depleting her family’s savings in a four-month spending spree.

According to the South China Morning Post, the 13 year-old girl from Henan, China, spent around 449,500 yuan, or about $94,000 buying mobile games for herself and her classmates, using her mum’s debit card. The teen also reportedly covered her tracks by deleting the transaction records so her mum wouldn’t find out.

The spending spree was finally uncovered when one the teenager’s teachers discovered what she’d been up to, after she was spending an increasing amount of time on her mobile phone at school. The teacher reported what she’d discovered to the mother.

But it was far too late, with the mum discovering her account had been drained by her daughter. In an interview the girl, who apparently became addicted to the games, explained why she did it.

“When they (the classmates) asked me to pay for their games, I paid despite feeling reluctant.” She says she didn’t feel she could tell anyone what she’d done because she knew how angry her parents would be.

What would you do if your child did this?! Let us know in the comments below.

  • The teenager knew what she was doing and the parents were totally oblivious. I would notice if money has disappeared from my account. AND the kids don’t usually have access to my bank accounts. On ONE occasion I gave my daughter my $300 limit credit card for her to use while on a friend outing to go have lunch and buy a birthday present for another friend. No she did not have permission to use up to $300 but I thought that would be better than giving her the $1000 limit credit card.

  • I’d be so upset if my kid did this! However, I think I’d notice if money kept disappearing from my account. Definitely couldn’t delete the transactions.

  • This is quite unbelievable. There would be no way I wouldn’t have known from the first use of my credit card, as I check my cards every day. Do hope there will be some reprisals and they be made known so that other ‘copy-cat’ children don’t try to do it as well.

  • OMG! I would totally notice even if emails were deleted.

  • Who has that much money in their accounts??

  • I can’t believe the mother didn’t realise this sooner? It’s a massive amount not just a few hundred ( which would be bad enough!)

  • Wow that’s crazy. How did the girl have access to her mums card? How did mum not notice. Better control of phone usuage needs to be in place.

  • How does one not notice $94000 missing from there bank account. I look at my bank balance atleast once a week not every 4 months.

  • I find it so hard to believe the mum never checked her account and noticed the problem.

  • Fast Learning 101 boy the parent has had a great lesson in life and I cant believe they had that much in a Debit card in China but I am always happy to have my leg pulled by a long funny story

  • Wow! I don’t understand though how the mother did not realise what was happening sooner. Four months is a long time for someone not to check their finances.

  • I would be absolutely devastated. I’m just so confused about how kids have access to their parents debit card. I’ve seen it time and time again when parents laugh at the kids knowing or using their debit cards. Our son has never been given our debit card for anything and does not know our numbers. I do not save my debit card details online ever. I purposely re-type them in every time I purchase something online. This is just ridiculous and so serious. Who has a spare $94K to be blown?

    • My 13 yr old used my husband’s credit card details to subscribe on a dating website when she was 11 yrs old. She hovered over his shoulder when he was making an online payment and memorized the details…

  • I think this would certainly be reason to get psychological help involved for the girl

  • Omg i cant believe it! Thats soo irresponsible and to hide it from her parents

    • Yes I think acts of restitution, teaching responsibility and ownership are important lessons to teach this girl

  • Wow that is a lot of money, how on earth did this go under the radar. I know when I buy something I get emails or text messages about purchases. I am gobsmacked ????

  • And that’s why I always choose NOT to save payment details!

  • Don’t leave your card available on the device? Who has that much money these days too haha. But yeah no thats bad.

  • All these stories just make me very aware to never leave my card or account connected to anything.

  • People are commenting on how the mother would feel and how could she should have checked her account. My focus wd be on the daughter, her addiction, why she felt compelled to pay for her friends (was she being bullied?) & continued altho she knew her mum wd be angry, and her mental state after the discovery. Yes, it’s a large sum of $, devastating to lose it. But the psychological impact on the girl cd be permanent.

  • Wow thats crazy! so many questions. How could she have deleted the transaction records?? And how did the mum not notice that much coming out of her account?? I feel like if this was in Australia the bank would have maybe flagged the transactions as suspicious and either put a hold on the account or called the mother.
