Ever wished your baby could tell you why they won’t stop crying? Now there’s now a gadget that does just that.

Remember the Simpsons episode when Homer’s half-brother Herb invents a machine that translates baby babble into words, and he regains his lost fortune? Well, there’s a company claiming it’s actually created a gadget that will translate your baby’s cries. For real.

QBear is a device that uses artificial intelligence to analyse the sounds your baby is making and will let you know if your baby is hungry, tired, needs comforting or has a dirty nappy. It lets you know in just 10 seconds what baby wants, with a 95% accuracy.

Recently showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, QBear looks a lot like a baby monitor, and can be placed on a tabletop, hung on a wall or on a cot stand. It notifies parents when their baby is crying or making noise and the app lets them know exactly what baby needs.

The tech behind QBear is fascinating. It has an 18-layer deep learning architecture which looks at more than 10,000 rows of crying data from babies. It also has a built-in speaker so parents can soothe the baby without having to go into the room, as well as a night light. It’s also able to give information on the baby’s room, including the temperature and humidity.

QBear is also programmed to automatically play a lullaby and womb noises if it detects the baby is tired. The company says that nurses, doctors and scientists have been involved in developing QBear, but there’s no word yet on a release date.

  • Wonder what the reviews will be like after it has been on the market for a bit?

  • Not sure I trust that this works. Not something I would consider.

  • Interesting device!

  • Interesting but what happened to good old getting to know your baby and their cues.

    Reply

  • Wow! We don’t need parents soon!!!

    • Indeed, it is an interesting topic and possible future pathway!

  • Sounds very interesting. I’ll be interested in reviews after it’s been on the market for a while longer.

  • Interesting device but not for me.

  • It might be a little helpful at those times when nothing you do seems to settle the baby. At least it gives you some inclination of what to try next if nothing else.

  • That’s amazing if it works!

  • If it does all the things successfully there will be nothing like it

  • The Simpsons- Predicting the future again lol… But seriously this is very cool, although I still think there is a lot to be said for mothers intuition…

  • I wonder if it really does work. It would be amazing if it did.

  • Interesting to see if this is actually correct.
Reading the headline I thought of that exact Simpson’s episode! I always say to hubby how good it would be to have one of those lol.

  • Not sure I would put 100% faith in a tech device telling me why my baby is crying

    • No me neither. A device can maybe gather some data, but can’t read feelings

  • I am not sure about these kinds of devices. It would be interesting to test it out and see how it goes

  • Wow definitely be worth buying to test this out, I’m amazed at new technology and how it enhances our lives making things easier. You need all the help you can get with anything baby.

  • Hmmm… 95% accuracy? I’m very sceptical and how can you actually measure that??

    Reply

  • I wouldn’t put my trust in a device like this, you know baby best, better trust your gut and common sense

  • This blows my mind! What a game changer if it works!!

  • Not sure how accurate that would be ???? but I’d be happy to be proven wrong!
