Ever wished your baby could tell you why they won’t stop crying? Now there’s now a gadget that does just that.
Remember the Simpsons episode when Homer’s half-brother Herb invents a machine that translates baby babble into words, and he regains his lost fortune? Well, there’s a company claiming it’s actually created a gadget that will translate your baby’s cries. For real.
QBear is a device that uses artificial intelligence to analyse the sounds your baby is making and will let you know if your baby is hungry, tired, needs comforting or has a dirty nappy. It lets you know in just 10 seconds what baby wants, with a 95% accuracy.
Recently showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, QBear looks a lot like a baby monitor, and can be placed on a tabletop, hung on a wall or on a cot stand. It notifies parents when their baby is crying or making noise and the app lets them know exactly what baby needs.
The tech behind QBear is fascinating. It has an 18-layer deep learning architecture which looks at more than 10,000 rows of crying data from babies. It also has a built-in speaker so parents can soothe the baby without having to go into the room, as well as a night light. It’s also able to give information on the baby’s room, including the temperature and humidity.
QBear is also programmed to automatically play a lullaby and womb noises if it detects the baby is tired. The company says that nurses, doctors and scientists have been involved in developing QBear, but there’s no word yet on a release date.
