Hello!

If there’s one thing I’m trying to save money on at the moment, it’s food. With two teenage boys, the sheer volume of groceries we go through is painful. So when I saw a segment on morning TV a couple of weeks ago about an app where you can snap up surprise bags of groceries and food for just a few bucks, I was intrigued!

I downloaded it, and decided to give it a whirl, and have been LOVING it! Now before I go any further (I’m going to sound like an influencer here) but I feel like I need to preface this article by saying this is totally not sponsored. I have managed to snap up three lots of surprise bags over the past couple of weeks and I’m low key ADDICTED! So I thought it only fair I share this with our Mouths of Mums community!

Ok by now I’m sure you just want to know what I’m talking about. The app is called Too Good To Go. It basically matches you up with food-related shops in your area that have surplus stock at the end of the day. You’re able to reserve a bag and pre-pay, and then there’ll be a specific time to pick it up. The bags cost around the $10 mark, some are cheaper, some a little more, and the kicker is you don’t know what’s going to be inside, because it’s stuff that’s leftover from the day’s trading

Too Good To Go officially launched in Australia late last year, but it’s actually the world’s largest marketplace for surplus food.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve bought two bags from Bakers Delight (from two different stores in my area) and one from Muffin Break. And I’ve been really impressed.

My latest bag from Bakers Delight (pictured above) cost $9.99 and included:

1 loaf of white bread
1 large Turkish flat bread
1 mixed seed loaf
2 cheese & bacon rolls
2 pizzas
1 vanilla slice scroll
2 custard Danish lattice

Given that a loaf of Bakers Delight bread starts at around $5, I think this was an absolute win! I managed to stock the freezer with some bits and pieces for school lunches and have some treats on hand for the kids.

I live in a regional area, so there aren’t many businesses jumping on board yet (I literally have a handful to choose from) but looking at larger areas, there are soooo many places now offering Too Good To Go. And there are more businesses jumping on board literally every day. From sushi, to sandwiches, smoothies, pizza. All you have to do is download the app and then set your area and you’ll be able to see what’s available around you.

@catlefever This is such a great idea!! I used the @Too Good To Go app 🤭 #bakersdelight #toogoodtogo #mysterybag #bakery #groceryhaul #aussiemum ♬ original sound – Cat✨

All of the bags I’ve purchased have been to be picked up the next day, so it does take a little forward planning. And I’ve found the bags go SUPER quick! You have to be lightening fast to grab one in my area, given we don’t have many shops doing it yet.

Here are my thoughts on Too Good To Go:

Pros:

  • Cost! Each bag I’ve purchased has been well over the paid value.
  • You’re helping save food from waste.
  • You’re helping a local business make a little extra money.

Cons:

  • You can’t choose the products – which makes it tricky for people with allergies.
  • I’ve seen some people share bags that don’t seem to be great value. But you can leave a star rating and feedback so it helps the businesses learn to be a bit more generous!

If you want to see what other people are getting in their surprise bags, just search Too Good To Go on Insta or Tik Tok – I love seeing the variety!

  • I haven’t heard of this but it sounds interesting. With ones like the baker’s Delight one you can freeze a lot of it. I think I’d find it hard as I’d have to change my way of thinking about meal planning. It’s definitely an idea I’ll keep an eye out for.

  • How does everyone manage to secure so many of these bags?! I live in a large city and everything is always sold out 24hrs before. The publicity is great for the businesses so nothing goes to waste but I would sure love to be a part of it and see what its like.

  • This article makes my mouth water each time I read it. One day when the pantry is totally empty I will log into the app, reserve a bag and go get it! Just hope there’s more sweet than savoury. I’ve noticed bakers delights in certain areas don’t make nice baked goods and I refuse to shop at those again.

  • This app sounds like such a great way to save money and reduce food waste at the same time! I love the idea of scoring a surprise bag and it’s great to see businesses stepping up to offer affordable options during tough economic times. I will definitely check this app out.

  • This is such a good idea. I love it. So many people are struggling nowadays and this would benefit so many families. Lets hope it gets the attention it deserves.

  • What I like the most about this idea is that surplus stock at the end of the day gets used instead that it is thrown away. I hate the thought that perfectly fine food is chucked away, especially when we consider that there are many people in the world who are starving.

  • Further, I’ve just had a look on the app and I have found that a really lovely new French patisserie in my area is there! I have actually been meaning to try it for ages, but it looks pricey, so I would love to get in for one of their bags!

  • This sounds amazing! I am definitely going to have a look at this. It is getting harder and harder with the cost of living and I’m sick of getting ripped off by supermarkets. I actually do often shop with Bakers Delight, so that’s a plus. There is a charity group in my local area who gets the day old stuff from Banjos and gives it away free, so that’s really great too.

  • What a great idea. I love this as have always wondered what happened to excess foods at bakeries in particular. Thanks for sharing.

  • This is a fantastic idea, I HATE that businesses throw away surplus stock that many people need due to outdated rules. I will be recommending this to my family and downloading it myself because anything my fussy household won’t use I would pass onto family anyway.

  • We are fans of Bakers Delight and they have such a delicious range of baked goods to buy and to eat. It is often a treat to buy their baked goods when planning the family food budget. I have shared this news about the food bags with my friends and family.

  • I got our first one a couple of days ago from Bakers delight. It was great because we got a range of different breads to try and the pizza base we were eyeing off and we were going to pay $5 for anyways so for an extra $5 we got another 4 items…. Amazing!

Plus it made me plan out my work lunches better to use the bread rolls etc as I’ve either been not eating lunch, getting chips from the vending machine or getting Uber eats on the days I really want something.

Glad to see businesses helping out the community as well by offering these sorts of things to get people through the rising cost of living.

  • Thanks, this is interesting. I’ve downloaded it to take a look and see if it is useful for me. My kids are not as picky as they used to be, so it could prove helpful. And if it’s not – well, I haven’t lost much and can just delete the app!

  • I had never heard of this before but I have now downloaded the app and hopefully can be lucky enough to score some cheap food items. I love that they are avoiding food waste but I just hope the local food pantries aren’t missing out on much needed food items for those in need.

  • I recently found out about this and tried it for the first time on Monday. It was great I got a delightful bag of goodies from
Bakers Delight for $9.99 and shared it with my mum. For those who love bread products it is fabulous especially for those with big families. Great value for money, it was so fresh too.

  • I like the idea of helping save food from waste and helping a local business make a little extra money as well. However personally I don’t like the aspect of not knowing what will be in the bag; we have 4 vegetarians living in our house hold, from which one is on gluten free and another one on diary free diet. None of us are consuming white flour products, rather we focus on wholesome and protein rich foods.
