For years the name Charlotte has been crowned the most popular baby girl name not only in NSW, but across Australia – but her reign has come to an end, with not one but two new baby girl names taking her spot on the throne.

The latest data for NSW births in 2023 has revealed that Isla and Amelia were the most popular baby girl names over the past 12 months, followed by Olivia, Mia, and then Charlotte coming in at number five. The top 10 is rounded out by Ava, Lily, Evelyn and Sophie and Matilda tied in ninth place.

NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages received 383 registrations of babies named Isla and Amelia respectively last year. Almost 60,000 births were registered in NSW in 2023.

Oliver remained the most popular boy’s name for the 10th consecutive year, with Noah once again in second place for the fifth year in a row.

The popular name trend continued in other Australian states, with Queensland also reporting Isla and Oliver as the top baby names of 2023.

According to the experts, baby names including Lavender, Clover, Harold, Rafe and Willa are set to become more popular in 2024.

  • Popular names are lovely, but it’s hard when in a class there are 3 or 4 kids with the same name. Last year my son’s kinder room had 3 boys named Noah, 3 girls named Ava, 2 boys and a girl named Charlie. every time he spoke about a particular one he would use their surname initial after their name so I knew who he was talking about.

  • I actually love all these top names but I chose something that wasn’t too common for all of mine. Nothing crazy or too out there but just not names you hear everyday so there wasn’t a classfull of kids with their name.
