A student has sadly died after being hit by a bus in front of his classmates near Newcastle in New South Wales.

The 15-year-old boy, believed to be in Year 10, was riding a bicycle when he was hit outside the gates of Irrawang High School.

Other students watched as he was dragged under the bus and was fatally injured.

Inspector Matt Hawke told the Newcastle Herald the scene outside the school was ‘incredibly distressing’.

‘It is a tough day for everybody involved,’ he added.

‘Ambulance chaplains and clinical psychologists also responded supporting witnesses and emergency services personnel.’

Police said the boy was hit on Mount Hall Road in Raymond Terrace at about 8.30am and died at the scene.

The bus has been taken for investigation and its 41-year-old driver will undergo mandatory testing.

  • RIP to the boy who was so tragically killed. My sympathy the boy’s parents and other relatives. I hope all people who need counselling use it for as long as they need it. I’m sure the school pupils who witnessed the accident or the after scenes will need plenty of counselling.
No doubt the cause of the accident will be found.
If the bus driver wasn’t under the influence of alcohol or drugs at all I hope we find out the cause.
I also hope the Media did not report this at all until after his parents were notified.
I personally know of an incident where a man was severely bashed in an undercover carpark after leaving a night sports game. Apparently the guys were breaking into a car and thought he had seen them. The Police were called and the Media found out, filmed the guy on the Ambulance Stretcher, then arriving at the hospital which was only a very short distance away. It appeared in TV News before the Police rang the parents.
